Description

In 1969 Frank Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim recorded sessions for what was to become their second release together “Sinatra Jobimâ€. A copy of the aborted second collaboration with Frank Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim (which didn’t even make it to test pressings in vinyl) is so scarce that the owner of one told Goldmine Magazine in a 1991 Frank Sinatra feature article that he wouldn't part with his "for at least  $5,000".  I’ve attempted to research this recording but have found limited resources; the Sinatra experts that I have asked were able to tell me that this 8-track is extremely rare and quite collectible ranging in price anywhere from $500.00 to $3,000.00. According to some collector’s guides (as stated by the author of an article on 8-Track Heaven), it could be valued as high as $5,000.00.

As the story goes, 3,500 8-track tapes were released and withdrawn immediately.  Warner Bros. even issued a recall to send back not only store stock, but those that had possibly been sold as well.  This recording was never released on any other format, be it Lp, cassette or reel-to-reel … ONLY 8-track tape cartridge.   It only got to the test press stage for Lp.  It is said that Warner Bros. destroyed all but 3 of the 3,500 with the possibility of up to 5 having survived … this is one of the survivors.  The reason for this recall is not fully known but speculation goes from Frank Sinatra’s dislike for the cover art and a few of the songs themselves to a corporate decision made by Warner/Reprise.  No one knows for sure.

I’ve used high quality scans as opposed to photographs to show the most detailed images of the 8-track and cardboard sleeve.  The scans have not been altered in ANY way and what you see is the actual item up for auction.  The tape has been tested on all 4 tracks and Frankie sounds great on all.  I have not played it in full for fear of risking any accidental damage to the tape or tape shell.  Foam pressure pads found in 8-tracks as old as this, and some younger, have a tendency to deteriorate over time as do the pinch roller wheels.  The pads on this tape, as seen in the photos, are as follows:  Center pad that the playback head pushes the tape against is in pretty good shape, not flattened and still having some flexibility … the pad where the track sensor would touch is showing signs of deterioration and starting to loosen.  The rubber pinch roller wheel (which is NOT the type used in earlier tapes that melted) is in excellent condition as is the tape itself, showing VERY little play.  I have not played the tape long enough for it to reach the metal splice that allows it to change tracks automatically, therefore I cannot comment on the condition of it.

I have described this item to the best of my ability and feel that I’ve represented it with the utmost honesty and with the most accurate information I could procure.

I assure you the item will leave my possession in the condition shown in the photographs, and will be packed meticulously to insure safe transit to the winning bidder. Please understand that I am not responsible for any damage or mishandling that may occur by whatever carrier takes control of the package once it leaves my hand … that is why I require insurance on the item reflecting the ending value of the auction. The bidder agrees to the above terms by placing a bid on my auction.  Payment methods accepted include PayPal (NO eChecks), Certified/Bank Check, USPS Money Order or Western Union Wire Transfer.  Sorry, NO PERSONAL CHECKS.  Winning bidder will be contacted with carrier options (USPS, UPS, Fed Ex, DHL……)  As previously stated insurance is mandatory.

Payment should be received no later than 1 week after the auction ending date; after that date I will report an "Unpaid Item Dispute" unless other arrangements have been made. If you have any questions, please ask before bidding, as all sales are final.  Please note:  Seller reserves the right to cancel bids from those with negative feedback.
