Description

Fistly I am NOT a record dealer & am merely selling this from my own collection. I have had a sort out of my old vinyl and found this that I had long forgotten about. I acquired it approx. 40 years ago some time in the mid 1970s included with various records etc. Exactly when & where I simply can't remember as I have bought & collected albums since the late 1960s. At the time I wasn't sure what it actually was, thinking it was perhaps a vaguely interesting album insert which I decided to keep. Roll on 40 years later & I found it again between some of my albums. After an exhaustive search on the internet I eventually discovered what it actually is. Below is an extract from an article on the "ultimate classic rock" website in 2012 :-

"Collectors seeking David Bowie vinyl are quick to take notice when rare copies of his 1971 ‘Hunky Dory’ album appear on the market. The trained eye searches for the limited pressing (500 copies) hoping to score what is widely known as the BowPromo; an extremely rare album promoting selections from ‘Hunky Dory.’ No training could have prepared collectors for this unique, preview copy that recently surfaced and sold for over $10 thousand on eBay.
This vinyl is the earliest, complete version of ‘Hunky Dory’ known to exist and could trump the dream of owning the collectible BowPromo. Bowie’s then-manager Tony DeFries was desperate to get Bowie in the spotlight and when the limited BowPromo failed to create the awareness he desired, he pressed up a handful of these records to promote his soon to be superstar.
This copy of ‘Hunky Dory’ is pressed on the Gem label and features all 11 songs. A contact address and phone number is clearly printed on the lime green label for easy access to management while the sleeve features the handwritten name, title and date. Though Bowie had already signed a three-record contract with RCA in the U.K. a month earlier, DeFries’ persistence secured a major deal for Bowie in the uncharted U.S.A..
This version is rare on so many levels that it will remain unmatched until another copy surfaces. The packaging is especially unique in that it has a gatefold sleeve containing press pockets that house carefully selected Bowie reviews and interviews. The sepia toned photo used for the cover print is also of interest as it would undergo a pastel colored makeover for its official release."

I don't have the promo record (and never have) but what I have listed is the original PROMO GATEFOLD SLEEVE containing the Rolling Stone article April 1971, a 2 page interview between David & Patrick Salvo entitled "Changes", & letter from London RCA promotion manager Brian Donoughue to select UK record shop owners telling them to push plays of the single "Changes" in order to boost album sales of Hunky Dory dated February 1972 (official headed RCA paper with RCA watermark as in one of the scans). The sleeve was produced by the Gem Group for RCA under the management of Tony Defries & Don Hunter. The album sized sleeve is made from card with 2 pockets containing the single sided sheets as pictured in my scans. The cover is the original sepia toned print of David in Marlene Dietrich pose which would undergo the pastel coloured makeover found on the original official album release. The sleeve & contents are in excellent condition with no rips or tears & must be high on the wish list of any serious Bowie fan or existing owners of the BOWPROMO album minus this packaging.  ANY PINKISH TINGE TO THE SCANS IS A FAULT OF MY CAMERA & NOT PRESENT ON THE ITEMS.    I haven't a clue what it's worth - hence no reserve and no buy it now price, the highest bidder will become the new owner and the final bid will determine the price. Remember this is a genuine period item from 1971/72 and not any kind of copy or reproduction !! And finally before you ask, NO I haven't any other rare Bowie items - I only wished I had !!!! Postage will be flat packed with card either side & enclosed in a cardboard album mailer for protection. UK postage is £5 signed for. Europe £10 signed for. USA, Australia etc. £15 signed for.
