Description

ONEADAYRECORDS – Delivering Quality Music to the World.

Artist or Band: THE SMALL FACES

Album Title: Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake.

Producer(s): Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane.

TRACK LIST:

Side 1: Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake; Afterglow; Long Agos and World’s Apart; Rene; Song of a Baker; Lazy Sunday.

Side 2: Happiness Stan; Rollin’ Over; The Hungry Intruder; The Journey; Mad John; Happydaystoytown.

Label/Format: Immediate – FIRST PRESS pale lilac format. Side one has the embossed ‘K T’ tax codes which are totally unworn or scuffed. Both fragile delicate letters are totally as made, crisp and sharp with not even a hint of any ink rubbing or flattening. This record has almost certainly been played no more than twice.

Label Conditions: A STUNNING PAIR: Highly attractive and immaculate, the best I have ever seen for this famous record as an original. A label that ages less well than many due to the delicate pale colour that shows every blemish, but few here to be seen. Just the odd faint and fine spindle trace, this beautifully preserved example looks really lovely.

Cat Number: IMSP 012.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 133 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: First format pressings on the pale lilac labels in stereo are rare and in this condition very rare. A copy like this that plays with pristine sound and with an immaculate cover are very hard to locate these days. Not available too long before being repressed on the intensely coloured magenta-pink labels. Never forget still later pressings did not even have the round multi-opening cover. An immensely fragile cover and looking almost as new and even including the original round, split top polythene inner, this is a copy for the connoisseur collector and such copies will always prove elusive. A world-class example of one of the greatest ever psych-pop albums ever issued – try to find a better one.

Original Year of Release: 1968

Matrix Nos: IMSP 012 1Y / IMSP 012-2Y (the second issues had an additional -2/-2 after the ‘Y’.

Stamper Codes: 1 A / 1 R

Musicians: Steve Marriott - guitar, vocals; Ronnie Lane - bass, vocals; Ian McLagan - organ; Kenny Jones – Drums.

Brief Artist & Album Info: One of the true iconic classic albums from the late 60s. Along with The Who, one of the most famous ‘mod’ bands of all time – ‘Ogden’s’ took The Small Faces into the flower-power scene that embraced 1967, ‘the summer of love’, but they did not sacrifice their identity and retained their distinctive sound and perspective. A good time ‘conceptual’ album that carries a high sense of tongue-in-cheek fun, Marriott’s cockney vocals rarely sounded better especially on the single ‘Lazy Sunday’. Eccentric comedian, Stanley Unwin narrates the concept suite ‘Happiness Stan’ that occupies side two. Never falling into ‘novelty tag’ due to the brilliance of all the songs, this album is a pure joy from start to finish. A strong selling album, reaching the top spot in the UK but a lowly 159 in the US – maybe a little to eccentric for their market at this time. Including an innovative multi-fold out cover this classic album received rave reviews on issue and is still great fun to listen too today. A masterful swan-song for this band, it could have hardly ended on a higher note and this truly supreme copy does it maximum justice with jaw-drop stereo sound. Rarely ever will an available near mint copy of this be seen or offered in such breathtaking condition. If this has been on your ‘Wants-list’ for some time – the wait could not be over – this will never be beaten, only matched (if lucky).

Cover’s Potential for Wear & Damage: Very high indeed, practically off the scale. One of the most famous and distinctive covers ever made but one of the most delicate and fragile ever made too. To even find an original in one piece is something of an achievement, to find one in really immaculate clean and attractive condition with next to no wear is ultra difficult and practically impossible. A multi-foldout format with thin flimsy hinges that hold the whole thing together, only the most ‘unused’, little handled examples will ever survive. This one has not only just ‘survived’, all the hinges are little short of ‘new’ with no stressing or weakening at all – totally remarkable for a cover this amazing age. Most are found cellotaped back together or simply hanging together by a thread. Tatty frayed hinges that are badly creased and split are almost the normal, and just about hanging on to hold the five parts together. Most gave up years ago and only a very few will ever survive like this. My pictures show all the illustrated faces and hopefully the hinges can be seen clearly, note how solid and crisp they are – worthy of a second or third look as you won’t find them like this too often. The round cover rims are so often torn, creased and heavily feathered, again few will match these. Included also with this copy is the semi-round inner with the flat top and entrance slit. This too is in incredible condition being ultra clear and unsplit with only modest crinkle. Please see the picture of the LP inside it, being so clear it will probably not be easy to see, but the sharpness of the record label should give good clues. Being unlaminated too, this cover suffers all the perils of handling, rubbing, fading and grubbiness, few ever get seen this clean and unworn. This famous ‘tobacco tin’ cover has clearly been hardly handled and stored in cottonwool for decades and it will take something quite remarkable to better it significantly. Both record and cover have not seen light-of-day for many, many years, how many others can truly be like this?

Cover Grade and Format: Mint(-) and quite honestly, I can hardly imagine ever finding a better one with such an early-pressed pale lilac record inside. I have described the format above and my pictures should ‘describe’ it better than loads of words. It was printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd (please see imprint close-up). The back has the UK Patent Application No of 21639/68. I would think my pictures speak for themselves – a better example of quite possibly the world’s most fragile cover will never be found easily.

Cover – The Ten Faces: All the eight illustrated faces are in supreme condition and I hardly can imagine them better. Deep rich colour is retained by all including the more vulnerable front and back ‘covers’. An ultra faint, faint surface semi-crease is just visible near the top only. Clean, fresh and practically no wear or grubbiness traces at all, clearly little used or handled and the lack of creasing is amazing. Often the victim of price sticker tears or residue marks, this has none. The two unillustrated faces have ultra mild traces of ‘set-off’ from the other pages but as light as it ever gets and practically unavoidable. These fragile sections will prove near impossible to find better.

Cover – The Hinges: All rock solid, no stressing, no splits or tears or rubs. One tiny surface crease on the back if being ultra critical. They even retain their surface ink which is near impossible these days – YES, even the bottom ‘resting edge’ one – that is near impossible to see. Clearly a cover hardly ever unfolded or handled, these are truly delicate but as strong as manufacture day with great neat shape retained by all.

Cover – The Rims: The rims are as neat and crisp as practically possible, any thickening or burring is minuscule and remember, this has to rest on an area somewhere when being stored. Any minor burr traces are just seen on at the 10 o’clock position when viewed end-on, but are very mild and light. I actually wonder how many copies sold new from shops were absolutely crisp and sharp, remember these were handled in manufacture and distribution and even more so, within shop racks when viewed. Quite honestly, this cover has all the hallmarks of looking almost ‘as made’.

Cover Summary: Quite possibly one of the best still in existence that would have been in the shops almost from day one, this will blow most away. Often seen offered and super-hyped at high grades literally falling apart or with more-than-obvious repairs or held together with cellotape. Damaged hinges, torn, badly feathered edges – we have all seen them. Chalk-and-cheese, this will remind many what they once looked like when first purchased. Connoisseur standard and few ever get offered like this. A very rare opportunity to own one of the most famous covers ever almost like the day it was manufactured. A great reason to use ALL the available Ebay picture allowance with big close-up shots as clear as I can possibly manage. These don’t lie and it a cover has it – flaunt it!

The Inner: EX++ and really better still. This is very neat and unsplit with only mild surface ruffling that is practically unavoidable. The lower part is circular, the top is flat. It has an entrance slot in the front. Unusually, no splits or tears and very clear too as mentioned above. Often missing altogether and rarely seen looking like this and guaranteed ORIGINAL.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Tempted again to grade Mint, it’s easily justified but the odd ultra faint surface trace can just be seen with natural light coming in my window, I will grade Mint(-), and this hardly does it real justice. A supreme visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed on thick top quality vinyl. Barely a noteworthy mark or blemish and this wonderful record plays beautifully from start to finish. Always remember too what this could have been played on. Heavily tracking thick needles that left their marks freely – one drop – one more classic written-off and confined to history – this looks barely even played or handled and this copy simply exudes class. A copy time has forgotten and the true classics rarely get seen so unused. All serious collectors have seen badly scratched, grime-filled grooves covered with fingermarks and labels a maze of spindle gouges. Holding this vintage classic, now 40-years-old, will give that maximum pleasure and that’s before even placing it on the deck and listending. Visually a super record that will please all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This psych-pop classic plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A superb stereophonic record, any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album. Side two with its narration is particularly ruthless in revealing unwanted sounds but here, practically nothing was heard. Few copies will match or outperform this original pressing I feel sure. These type of albums were simply played into submission, even trashed, when they look and sound this good, you have somethinig really special and the importance of this classic record cannot be overstated. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has barely been played and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove near impossible indeed to find better. This is ‘keeper’ copy that will never need upgrading and it’s a copy I can strongly recommend to everyone – the connoisseur audiophile collector included.

End Piece: Seen as fairs occasionally, just about intact, but I hardly dared breath on them incase they fall apart and the records badly marked with a host of spindle marks – but still with a hefty price tag – this simply brings home just how scarce this album must be when found like this. A landmark, delicate and complex cover like this has to be stored with the utmost care to even look half this good. At this great age, just how many will receive little to no trauma in that time? It takes loving and caring record collectors to keep fragile items like this in top conditions and that’s simply the case here. A one-only original collector who only played on top equipment - there lies the difference. Remember: ‘Life is just a bowl of All-bran, you wake up every morning and its there’ – well you won’t wake up to a copy of this album looking and sounding quite like this everyday, that is for certain. Do not lose this truly beautiful album.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. I pride myself on offering a variety of genres to keep my site as interesting as possible. I will rarely offer any record that falls below a true Excellent grading, unless its of a certain rarity which will justify offering a lesser grade. I try, to the best of my ability to describe as accurately and as honesty as I can all items I offer for sale with all the relevant information I can think of to help any potential bidder and collector. You may notice I only submit records sparingly on Ebay - on average ONEADAY, a couple more at weekends if time permits, hence the name - time rarely allows for more as I Play-Grade virtually every record I offer in their entirety, not just bits to guess a grade - visuals alone do not always tell a true or full story. I will mention any defects or flaws no matter how small that I notice to be fair as possible to any interested collector – I am very fussy and my buyers have the right to be too. Every record I offer, whether it be a common or rare item deserves the same respect as far as I am concerned and will be treated the same - just because an item is rare does not always mean its good. I get just as much pleasure offering a relatively common record in stunning near mint condition as the real rare items. All the pictures I use for your guidance are taken with a digital camera or scanned - they are NOT improved, cleaned-up or made better looking than they are with camera trickery or enhancing with digital programmes. What you see is what you get and scanned labels will give a more accurate representation of the genuine colour than flash photography where light is variable. I cannot guarantee total accuracy for colours however but most will be very close. If any picture I take looks more flattering than the actual item for any reason, I will clearly state the fact in the advert and vice-versa. I hope the item below is to your liking - any questions can be emailed and I will do my very best to answer you. I am enthusiastic, and have a fair degree of knowledge about many genres and I promise quality items - bid with confidence - excellence comes as standard and so does Near Mint regularly. Please assume all records I offer have NO jumps, sticks, warps or writing on covers or labels unless clearly stated to the contrary. Thanks for your interest and Good luck – MIKE.

Equipment Used for Play-Grading: I now play-grade ALL the records I offer (unless clearly stated to the contrary) on the following equipment:

Deck: Linn LP12 with Ittok Mk IV arm and Ortofon Samba Moving Coil cartridge (tracks at 1.8 grams). Amps: Naim Nait 5i with Project USB phono stage and Chord interconnects. Speakers: B&W 704 Floorstanding 3-way Monitors (bi-wired). All records I offer on Ebay are cleaned on a professional Moth vacuum machine before play-grading for the cleanest and best possible sound and will include a brand new lined inner and protective cover too.

First-time, zero-rated bidders, who do not ask permission to bid, will be cancelled immediately and blocked – NO exceptions. For winning bidders who I consider excessively slow to make contact or submit payment, I will use my right to block future bids. If any bidder who wins in the final seconds is present to do so, surely they can at least email me to inform of intention and payment method? If swift or promp payment is a problem, please do not bid.

POSTING & PACKING: What You Get: To confirm to the strict Ebay rules on shipping, I must now send ALL my packets out ‘Signed-For’ with NO exceptions. Both buyers and sellers want their packets to have a safer journey and this is no bad thing. Also: any item with a value over £40 will have to be insured as well, but for any item that sells for over £150, I will pay the extra insurance (then the lower shipping price applies).

I now offer the fastest possible posting, mostly the very next day after payment is received or within three days maximum (unless on holiday). All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT mailers) with the record(s) REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with TWO VERY THICK stiffners for even extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will be Double Boxed. The cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW heavy duty soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my Moth Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. Printed address labels are used for clarity as well as a sender label. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. Customers requests or special needs for P&P will be respected if at all possible but ‘Signed-For’ posting is NOT an option anymore. I do not profit on posting and offer probably the best-value and safest shipping possible. I will invoice any winning bidder as soon as possible after the auction ends. My ‘loss’ or ‘damage rate’ is less than 0.1 per percent based on over 4,000+ items sold in over 8 years of Ebay trading and I consider that pretty exceptional. I discount of course of multiple purchases with a maximum of FOUR records per packet. I will not respond to questions on shipping costs as all the details are included in the advert.

NOTE: First Time Bidders: I will cancel ALL first-time bidders with no feedbacks or excessive negatives who do not ask me if its OK to bid first – NO EXCEPTIONS.

Please Note: I will now offer any item to the runner-up after the mandatory Ebay 3 days if no contact is made by the winning bidder unless prior notice of any delay is given beforehand. The same applies if no payment is received within the mandatory 7 days so any bidder who has just lost out can still email me to reserve the item as priority second chance – it’s always worth asking.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
