Description

TCHAIKOVSKY -

Piano Concerto #1 in B-flat Minor, Op.23

Van Cliburn, piano

Kyril Kondrashin/Symphony Orchestra

Jack Pfeiffer, producer

John Crawford, recording engineer

RCA CCS-187

2-Track Stereo for "In-Line" heads

7 1/2 ips; 7-inch reel; notes on the back of the box

Please note: for proper balances on playback, all 2-track tapes must be played on a 2-track machine.   Playback on a 4-track machine will not give even weight to the channels and may not be satisfactory.

This recording was made on May 30, 1958.  But the enormous popularity of Cliburn following his first prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in April of that year obviously impelled RCA to rush the recording into print.  The LP appeared as a new release in the Schwann Catalog in October, and simultaneously this 2-track tape appeared RCA's "New Releases" tape flyer, also from October 1958.

This 2-track issue's last appearance in an RCA Tape Catalog came in February of 1961, after which it disappeared (along with all the rest of the RCA 2-tracks).  In fact, in that same February 1961 catalog, RCA was already listing the same recording in a 4-track release (FTC-2043), which of course ended up being much more common than this 2-track, which, having been in the catalog for so short a time, is quite scarce.

The tape is in excellent condition; its box shows minor shelf wear.
