ORIGINAL 1939 Album LEAD BELLY Negro Sinful Songs BLUES

ORIGINAL 1939 Album LEAD BELLY Negro Sinful Songs BLUES

5 DISC ALBUM of 78s

NEGRO SINFUL SONGS was Lead Belly's first commercially available album, released in 1939.  Most of the tracks were recorded in the New York studios of Musicraft Records in 1939. This is the ORIGINAL MULTI-RECORD ALBUM FROM 1939 with the five 78s still in their sleeves.

We are booksellers and discovered this treasure in a warehouse last week. We are not well versed in describing/rating records, have not attempted to listen to these records, and have left them exactly as found, so please bid with caution.

Description of Album:  10.5" x 12". Linen spine binding and cardboard pictorial front cover. Sepia tone photograph of cotton pickers on a plantation. Interior has 5 sleeves containing records.
Vinyl:  5 (five) 78 rpm discs:

First record is Album 31 226B 'De Kalb Blues' and 226-A 'The Boll Weevil'. This record is in poor condition - large "bite" on edge, probably destroying 1/4 of songs.

Second record is Album 31 225-A 'Poor Howard' and 'Green Corn", verso has 225-B 'Fannin Street'.  This record is in poor condition - significant crack throughout.

Third record is Album 31 223B 'Looky, Looky Yonder', 'Black Betty',  'Yellow Women's Door Bells' and verso 223-A 'Frankie and Albert' (first half) .  This record is all intact but appears to have surface scratches.

Fourth record is Album 31 224-B 'Ain't Goin' Down', 'To the Well No Mo' and "Go Down Old Hannah' and verso 224-A 'Frankie and Albert' (Completion).  This record is all intact but appears to have surface scratches.

Fifth record is Album 31 227-A 'The Gallis Pole' and verso 227-B 'The Bourgeois Blues'.  This record is all intact but appears to have surface scratches.

Background: Huddie William Ledbetter, (January, 1888 – December 6, 1949) was best known as Leadbelly or Lead Belly. Though many releases list him as "Leadbelly," he himself spelled it "Lead Belly." The topics of Lead Belly's music covered a wide range of subjects, including gospel songs; blues songs about women, liquor and racism; and folk songs about cowboys, prison, work, sailors, cattle herding and dancing. He also wrote songs concerning the newsmakers of the day, such as President Franklin Roosevelt, Adolf Hitler, the Scottsboro Boys and multi-millionaire Howard Hughes.

Lead Belly was born  on a plantation near Mooringsport Louisiana, but the family moved to Texas when he was five.  In January 1918 he was sent to prison for the second time, this time after killing one of his relatives, Will Stafford, in a fight. He was incarcerated in Sugar Land, Texas and it is there that he got the inspiration for the song Midnight Special.

In 1930, Lead Belly was back in prison, this time in Louisiana for attempted homicide.  It was there, three years later, that he was "discovered" by musicologists John and Alan Lomax.  The following year Lead Belly was once again pardoned.

In 1939 he was back in jail for assault. Upon his release in 1940, Lead Belly returned to a surging New York folk scene, and befriended the likes of Woody Guthrie and a young Pete Seeger.
