Muddy Waters "Folk Singer" UK Pye 1st press LP 1964: total killer R&B / mod

Don't let the title of this, Muddy's fourth Chess LP, fool ya – it may have been called "Folk Singer" to cash in on the American "Tom Dooley" boom but it's a killer set of slightly updated Delta-style blues with band backing on most of the cuts plus that gorgeous Chess echo. Mick Jagger, Keith Richard, The Pretty Things, Alexis Korner and ALL of those folks would have bought this sensational set, alongside the "Best Of" we've also got listed at the moment, from shops such as Dobell's Jazz Shop on London's Charing Cross Road...

This original UK mono vinyl (Pye International R&B Series NPL 28038) is as heavyweight a pressing as you'd expect, and it was obviously well loved back in the day. It looks a solid VG+ with numerous light marks but plays VG with background crackle and pops that don't overpower the music – prolly the result of the original owner using a Dansette, as they tracked much heavier than modern decks. The cover has light soiling, two circular dings in the front about as big as the blunt end of a pencil (see third picture above), light edge / corner wear and the original owner's name written neatly on the top of the back, it's a solid VG+. An increasingly scare set, this is a real kick to play and will provide true blues nuts, R&B connoisseurs, modernists and proper old-school hipsters with a hefty amount of pleasure for years to come!
