Original 1964 UK 1st pressing

MEGA RARE - RARELY SURFACES !!!

Label: COLUMBIA ?– 33 SX 1728

Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, MONO

Country: UK

Released: 1964

Genre: SOUL

Style: SWEET URBAN SOUL

No Way Out, the thrilling debut album by the Chocolate Watch Band, immediately finds that cosmic sweet-spot of perfect garage-rock traction: where the rubber meets the road and the train keeps a-rollin.' Nobody ever did Mick Jagger any better (even Mick, himself) than the Watch Band's frighteningly superb frontman Dave Aguilar. "Are You Gonna Be There (At The Love-In)" and "Let's Talk About Girls" are on everyone's list of Top 20 garage rock anthems of all time. And that's just the tip of the vermillion iceberg for this essential longplayer. "Come On," an early Stones single, gets the perfect Watch Band overhaul, "Hot Dusty Roads" ventures down back alleys that Buffalo Springfield never dreamed about and "No Way Out" dances rings around the outskirts of your nearest Human Be-In.

Comments

Major Lance was a popular soul star in the 60s, riding the crest of Curtis Mayfield's wave as it washed over Chicago and then the rest of the world. Curtis was a staff producer at Okeh and was cranking out souls hits for its stable of acts as well as his Impressions on ABC. Major was one of those artists and he enjoyed his highest level of artistic and commercial during his years at the label. In fact, Curtis wrote music and lyrics for all but two of these hits; all in the Top 40, most in the Top 10 and "The Monkey Time" hit #2 in 1963. That same year the Impressions reached #1 on the pop and R&B charts with "It's Alright" and in the next year he would write a spate of hits, with five tracks making it to the top of both Pop & R&B charts, "Keep On Pushin'" likely the best known. During the time Major Lance was under his stewardship, Mayfield was on fire.

Condition

This joyous slice of Chicago Soul is EXTREMELY RARE. The record has some surface scratches but plays superbly plays with minimal surface noise and no skips pops or major crackles - VERY GOOD condition.

The laminated flipback cover has some laminate cracking here and there but as you can see from the pix nothing seriously detrimental  and the spine is intact and all typography is fully legible. There is a small amount of storage wear on the edges here and there is some signs of handling discolouration and annotations on the unlaminated reverse. Overall though for an album of this vintage the sleeve is in reasonable shape - GOOD plus condition.

The black and silver labels are free of any annotations and have only some light spindle marks - VERY GOOD condition.

The record is housed in its original inner.

RECORD GRADING GUIDE

"MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.

VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and / or defaced.

POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection filler."

As well as the above grades, Near Mint is often used as well; this is really for a record that appears new but is known to have been played because the label has light spindle marks or because it has come from a previous owner and is assumed to have been played by them. For records which appear to fall between the accepted grades, + and - are also often added to the grading.
