Known by his stage name Muddy Waters, was an American blues musician who is often cited as the "father of modern Chicago blues". Muddy Waters grew up on Stovall Plantation, near Clarksdale, Mississippi, and by age 17 was playing the guitar and the harmonica, emulating local blues artists Son House and Robert Johnson.
He was recorded in Mississippi by Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress in 1941.
In 1943, he moved to Chicago to become a full-time, professional musician. In 1946, Muddy Waters eventually recorded his first record for Columbia Records and then for Aristocrat Records, a newly formed label run by the brothers Leonard and Phil Chess.
In the early 1950s, Muddy Waters and his band—Little Walter Jacobs on harmonica, Jimmy Rogers on guitar, Elgin Evans on drums and Otis Spann on piano—recorded several blues classics, some with bassist and songwriter Willie Dixon.
These songs included "Hoochie Coochie Man", "I Just Want to Make Love to You" and "I'm Ready".
In 1958, he traveled to England, laying the foundations of the subsequent blues boom there. His performance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1960 was recorded and released as his first live album, At Newport 1960.
Muddy Waters' influence is tremendous, not just on blues and rhythm and blues but on rock and roll, hard rock, folk music, jazz, and country music. His use of amplification is often cited as the link between Delta blues and rock and roll
Muddy stated that he was born in Rolling Fork, Mississippi, in 1915, but he was most likely born in Jug's Corner, in neighboring Issaquena County in 1913. Recent research has uncovered documentation showing that in the 1930s and 1940s, before his rise to fame, he reported his birth year as 1913 on his marriage license, recording notes, and musicians' union card.
A 1955 interview in the Chicago Defender is the earliest Muddy claimed 1915 as his year of birth, which he continued to use in interviews from that point onward. The 1920 census lists him as five years old as of March 6, 1920, suggesting that his birth year may have been 1914. The Social Security Death Index, relying on the Social Security card application submitted after his move to Chicago in the mid-1940s, lists him as being born April 4, 1913. His gravestone gives his birth year as 1915.
His grandmother, Della Grant, raised him after his mother died shortly after his birth. Grant gave him the nickname "Muddy," at an early age, because he loved to play in the muddy water of nearby Deer Creek. He later changed it to "Muddy Water" and, finally, "Muddy Waters." The shack on Stovall Plantation where Muddy Waters lived in his youth is now at the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale, Mississippi.
He had his first introduction to music in church: "I used to belong to church. I was a good Baptist, singing in the church. So I got all of my good moaning and trembling going on for me right out of church," he recalled. By the time, he was 17, he had purchased his first guitar. "I sold the last horse that we had. Made about fifteen dollars for him, gave my grandmother seven dollars and fifty cents, I kept seven-fifty and paid about two-fifty for that guitar. It was a Stella. The people ordered them from Sears-Roebuck in Chicago." He started playing his songs in joints nearby his hometown, mostly in a plantation owned by Colonel William Howard Stovall.
Muddy toured England in 1958 and shocked audiences (whose only previous exposure to blues had come via the acoustic folk blues sounds of acts such as Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee and Big Bill Broonzy) with his loud, amplified electric guitar and thunderous beat. His performance at the 1960 Newport Jazz Festival, recorded and released as his first live album, At Newport 1960, introduced a new generation to Muddy's sound.
Luther "Snake Boy" Johnson (August 30, 1941 – March 18, 1976) was an American Chicago blues and electric blues guitarist, singer and songwriter. He was also known as Luther "Snake" Johnson or Luther "Georgia Boy" Johnson and was also billed as Luther King and as Little Luther (he recorded under the latter name for Chess Records in the 1960s).
Allmusic journalist Ron Wynn stated, "Johnson's own inimitable vocals, raspy lines and tart guitar eventually create his own aura... a good, occasionally outstanding blues artist."
He is not to be confused with Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson or Luther "Houserocker" Johnson, from Atlanta.
He was born Lucious Brinson in Davisboro, Georgia. He was raised on a farm and taught himself to play guitar.
After completing his service in the US Army in 1953, Johnson played guitar with the Milwaukee Supreme Angels, a local gospel group in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. However, he gravitated towards blues and formed his own trio in Milwaukee. He relocated to Chicago, Illinois, in the early 1960s. He backed Elmore James prior to his James's death in 1963. Johnson recorded a solo single, "The Twirl", released by Chess Records in 1964, on which he was billed as Little Luther.
He joined Muddy Waters's backing band in 1966. Johnson worked with various musicians during this period, including Chicago Bob Nelson. He recorded his debut album, Come On Home, in 1969.

The Vinyl
On initial visual inspection the vinyl looks absolutely superb, Thick heavy, chunky slab of vinyl only found like this on the earliest pressings! Just like it has just come from the shop in my opinion, and I can't see or feel any scratches or marks that would cause any loud constant clicks or pops at all! Any marks that could possibly be seen would be light whypsy surface scuffs and sleeve removal type only.. , This lays perfectly flat on the turntable and are free from any warping. (Note! I have double checked this) The vinyl looks superb, still retaining its original glossy sheen from new. (no) deep needle scratches or marks that would cause any loud constant clicks or pops at all!
The Audio Quality
I have played the vinyl prior to listing on a top system at very loud volume! The audio is superbe cristal clear and very vibrant throughout! Top audio seperation on all frequencies only heard like this on early original 1st pressings! Note! This is the best sounding copy that I have heard,, so vibrant and clear, you will not find a better sounding album! Importantly there were no loud constant clicks/ticks, pops or any jumps truly awesome and very rare for a 1st pressing. The audio is graded at Near as Mint in my opinion!
PLEASE NOTE! I always add this disclaimer! I have played this album prior to listing as usual and have given my honest opinion on the audio quality. Please remember this is a 43 years old original vinyl (not a reissue) Please allow for the odd interference/static/crackle/tick but importantly nothing consistant through out the audio! Please remember that this would have been originally played on a system that is 43 years old!
All indications i.e. that this vinyl has (not) been overplayed and in fact looks barely ever played, I would even say looks totally unplayed in my personal opinion (No spider marks or traces!), at least no more than one or two times in my opinion and the audio quality superbe on all frequencies.
The labels
This features the original 1st UK issue "Transatlantic" labels. These are superbe Barely a spider mark on the labels, (even when angled to the light) Perhapes just feint traces only. and little if (no) spindle ware! This vinyl looks almost as unplayed in my personal opinion!
The Record Sleeve
This is the original white poly lined sleeve. No splits or tears. Superb for 49 years old like this! There is some browning/fading creasing with age noted. The vinyl is now and has always been stored seperately from the sleeve. Note This is the original!
The cover
The original 1st issue un-laminated MacNeiel Press Printed cover. Cover is absolutely superbe! Rarely seen in decent condition. There are (no) edge splits or tears. Note: There is light corner bumping/creasing is noted at the bottom corner near the spine. There is just light edge and corner creasings to mention. A truly superbe example rarely seen like this. All text is readable. Any other imperfections, are not noticed unless looked for in my opinion. Must be at least excellent in my opinion rarely ever seen like this after 49 years on this cover!
