Description

PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question.   OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week.   Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office. Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback.   We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery.   We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Please give us 5 stars in each category through the feedback system, and we will be able to effectively continue to fulfill your passion for rare and collectible music! We have served thousands of satisfied customers - far more than our feedback records indicate - and our aim is to continue to do so. MONO ...RARE MONO FIRST PRINT - OVER 50YEARS OLD!

AWESOME & RARE PHOTO INNER SLEEVE!!!

RARE ... Original 1966 first pressing in GREAT all CLEAN shape ... the 51 year old collectible contains the Batman & Robin inner sleeve, which is exceedingly hard to find ...

Despite the comic book cover, the MUSIC is very interesting comprised ENTIRELY by the legendary "SUN RA" and THE BLUES PROJECT ...

The obsure "TIFTON AUDIO" label is thick and weight heavy - this is NOT the cheap European reissue ...

In 1966, a toy company in Newark, New Jersey released this album called Batman and Robin to cash in on the popular BATMAN TV series of the same name. The music on the LP was credited to "The Sensational Guitars of Dan and Dale," but in fact the band was one of the greatest UN-CREDITED session combos of all time, including the core of Sun Ra & his band and Al Kooper's Blues Project. This Batman album finds Sun Ra playing his most accessible music since the early R&B stuff recorded as “The Cosmic Rays”. Al Kooper was no slouch, appearing on Dylan’s Highway 61 and Blonde on Blonde among countless other truly classic records. And his Blues Project were making some eccentric and fine music of their own around this time. Here, they all are, in disguise!

THE FAN-MAN makes a statement, a.k.a. "a view on the subject" ::::

" The record must carry secret messages: It incited me to SUN Ra-appropriate subversive behavior at the age of 10. My friend Tim was staying at my house with a broken leg. We were bored and restless. After making up karaoke songs using the record and a Mr. Microphone, we were mysteriously inspired to turn on every electronic music box in the house, simultaneously, at full volume, while still singing along to the Batman record. We had all the radios on, and all the record players, and all the cassette decks. I danced in an entranced frenzy while Tim hopped and swiveled around in his leg cast. My mom woke up (amazingly, not right away) and was not happy. It was one of the loudest and most chaotic sounds I have ever contributed to making, and to this day, Tim and I celebrate the anniversary of that day, May 2nd, by calling and leaving weird sounds on each others' answering machines.

When I first bought Cosmic Tones For Mental Therapy and heard Moon Dance, I was instantly struck by the similarity to the extremely dissonant organ which dominates on moments of "Batman Theme" (especially the album's extended, threatening opening chord!!) and "The Penguin Chase"--and at that point I didn't even know Sun Ra had a hand in this LP. The organ setting is identical--the stops, the Leslie sound. When I first heard the "Singles" compilation, the mere rhythmic feeling in the Yochannan track "The Sun One" reminded me of this LP, and it registered as relief and epiphany when reading the notes carefully indicated that they had played on this LP.

Pat Patrick's bari sax, and the charts for it, usually in unison with John Gilmore playing an octave higher, are a major tip-off. "Batman's Batmorang", in particular, features halting, cartoony marching rhythms to the horn charts that remind me of "Plutonian Nights" and the "Visits Planet Earth" version of "Planet Earth."

"Batman and Robin over the Roofs" is the longest track on the album, a 6-minute or so jam on a one-chord go-go rhythm. It begins with one of those unison charts, which would sound like a slightly dissonant, but nonetheless inside, blues solo if it weren't being played by both saxes, an octave apart. It culminates in an organ solo that seems to be fighting an ongoing urge towards chaos, nonetheless sneaking in some chords similar to those found at the end of "Music from the World Tomorrow," and, again, parts of "Moon Dance." The opening chart returns after this solo, and the jam fades on an electric guitar solo.

"Flight of the Batman" contains very strange slide whistle, siren whistle, and rhythmic squonking that could, as well, be a Run Ra Arkestra idea. This track even contains a squeaking door as part of the instrumentation of the later verses, and what appears to be a garbage can be shaken during the fadeout.

It is possible that the discography entry above could be a bit more accurate.
I hear no evidence of the Arkestra on the last track of side A, unless they are contributing the harmonica and Jew's harp.

(On listening again today, I think it's a slight possibility that it is actually Al Kooper playing organ on "The Penguin Chase." I say that only because of the absence of the horns. The organ setting, the chord voicing and attack still sound much more like Sonny to me, and, again, "Moon Dance" brings this track to mind.)

The Sun Ra Arkestra may be on parts of side B as well. There are horns aplenty on the last three tracks. I suppose they could be some other players, too. I'd say it's a toss-up as to whether Sun Ra or Al Kooper is playing on "Robin's Theme," "Penguin's Umbrella," and "Batman and Robin Swing." The last one is a bit dissonant, and they all have a very funny, staccato sound that could be Sunny.

"Batmobile Wheels" is "A Lover's Concerto", which was a 1965 pop-hit 4/4 resetting of "Minuet in G major" (BWV Anh. 114) from J.S. Bach's Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach.

It features a rather uninspired solo by what may be a trombone, and unison playing with a trumpet. It's only the Disney-fied, halting quality to the chart that makes me think Sonny might have had a hand in it.

"The Riddler's Retreat" is an instrumental version of The Beatles' "She Loves You."

"The Bat Cave" is a generic 12-bar blues in the style of Booker T and the MGs.

These last two feature some pretty inside sax solo-ing. Perhaps someone with a better ear could tell me if these sound like John Gilmore? There aren't any other horns on these tracks, and no distinctively Sun Ra organ playing."

unknown-tp; unknown-tb; Pat Patrick-bs; John Gilmore-ts; Marshall Allen-as; unknown-hca; Sun Ra-Hammond B-3 org (on Batman Theme and probably the other items on Side A); Al Kooper-org (Side B); Steve Katz-lead eg; Danny Kalb-eg; Andy Kulberg-eb; Roy Blumenfeld-d; unknown female vocalists (on Batman Theme); unknown female vocalist (on Robin's Theme).

An LP, about 34 minutes long, produced by Tom Wilson for a toy company in Newark, New Jersey. January 1966.
