The 1958 Jazz Track LP compilation is made up of two unrelated studio sessions. The first side is devoted to ten songs composed by Miles Davis for the soundtrack to the French film L'Ascenseuer Pour l'Echafaud, with pianist René Urtreger, tenor saxophonist Barney Wilen, bassist Pierre Michelot, and drummer Kenny Clarke joining the trumpeter.

The second side represents only a portion of the May 26, 1958, studio session with Bill Evans, John Coltrane, and Cannonball Adderley that has since been reissued in full on CD. The softly stated treatment of "On Green Dolphin Street," with Davis' muted trumpet, Evans' impeccable accompaniment, and Jimmy Cobb's tasteful brushwork is masterful, though Adderley and Coltrane quickly shatter that mood following their respective entrances.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY KEN DRYDEN, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

MILES NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION. IF YOU ARE INTO ABSOLUTE BEAUTY OF ABSOLUTE SOUND, THIS CLASSIC 1957 MILES’ ALBUM (RECORDED AS A SOUNDTRACK TO "L'ASCENSEUR POUR L'ESHAFAUD" FRENCH FILM-NOIR) IS FOR YOU. ON THIS ONE, MILES IS BACKED BY THE TIGHT COMBO COMPRISING OF SOME OF THE MOST COMPETENT, CREATIVE MUSICIANS EVER ASSEMBLED IN ONE PLACE. SIDE B INCLUDES CLASSIC COLUMBIA QUINTET (CANNONBALL ADDERLEY, BILL EVANS, JOHN COLTRANE)  . ON THIS ALBUM, MILES CREATES MODAL AND TONAL NUANCES UNKNOWN TO HUMAN EAR AND MOODS HERETOFORE UNKNOWN TO HUMAN MIND. THIS IS TRULY A MUSIC TO COMMIT MURDER BY. IF IT WERE NOT SO BEAUTIFUL, THIS MUSIC WOULD HAVE BEEN POSITIVELY SCARY.

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 5:1 (NOTE: fake stereo versions came out on Fontana label, not on Columbia, and had a different artwork).

(d)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(e)           True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD (VG)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has all three seams (top, bottom and spine) partially split,  as follows:

-        Top seam: between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters. This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-        Bottom seam: between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters.

-        Spine: less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters.

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on all three seams

-         Cover has three corners slightly worn / dinged / bent.

-         Cover has a small cutout corner visible

-         Cover has some ring wear.  On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 5.

-        A visible water stain affects the area about 6 square inches in one bottom corner  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY); there is no structural damage to the cover, and both cardboard base and paper slick are intact, however, the stain is visible and has caused some erosion in the firmness of the cover ,  visible yellowish discoloration and a few microscopic peel-off marks in the affected area.

-         Cover has two (2) small stamps with a name and/or address of the previous owner on the back panel

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.

-         Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
