MARLENA SHAW COOKIN WITH THE BLUE NOTE LIVE AT MONTREUX BLUE NOTE RECORDS LA-251 ISSUE
Put the disc on the hi-fi and kick back... if you can sit down through this amazing recording!
Marlena Shaw is a true Muse of Song, there is no arguing that point, is there? No way.
And I have not heard ANY Live at Montreux recordings I didn't like, so there's that too, but this recording is so intimate and warm sounding, I suggest that anyone who loves Shaw purchase this LP.
But listening to it and I find that no minute is wasted. From the MC's introduction to Shaw taking the stage, the band and singer play super tight and Marlena sings, scats, and whispers throughout.
She does a cover of Stevie Wonder's "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life," and Marvin Gaye's "Save The Children" and makes them all her own. And then we get to the finale, a live version of "Woman Of The Ghetto," a song that I heard only recently (my intro) and that started me on my Shaw kick. Here, Marlena starts scatting, humming, and preaching, becoming nearly belligerent as she tops her own version of this song.
This VINYL LP is short but sweet! It was recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 05, 1973, and sounds great.
CADET RECORDS LPS-833 ISSUE OF MARLENA SHAW'S THE SPICE OF LIFE
The record label Chess Records released a lot of well-known records in its heyday. However, some of their greatest albums were released on their subsidiary jazz label Cadet Records. One of the albums in that catalogue was the sophomore album from New York singer Marlena Shaw. She released her 1967 debut "Out Of Different Bags" which garnered her critical acclaim. However, her biggest success would be right around the corner. In 1969, she would release her second album- the now-classic "The Spice Of Life" with producer Richard Evans and Cadet's in-house arranger/producer Charles Stepney (Best known for his later work with the band Earth, Wind & Fire). From there, the duo crafted an excellent album for the jazz songstress. As great as the album was, it remained out of print for a number of years. The legendary jazz label Verve Records reissued and remastered the album in 2005- possibly due to the album's song "California Soul" being featured prominently in the F. Gary Gray ensemble heist film- 2003's "The Italian Job".
Starting the album off is the song "Woman Of The Ghetto", a song where Marlena Shaw questions those in government about their attitudes toward the inner city children. She excels on a cover the T-Bone Walker blues song "Call It Stormy Monday"- a song that was made famous by Lou Rawls. On the song "Where Can I Go", she sings of being left alone without anyone to turn to. "I'm Satisfied" sounds like the best song Tammi Terrell never recorded. She sings of wanting to have real love on "I Wish I Knew (How It Feels To Be Free)". She sings of a woman scorned on "Liberation Conversation", which leads into the album's centerpiece- the Nicholas Ashford & Valerie Simpson penned "California Soul". For YEARS, I thought that The 5th Dimension was the only singing group that had released the song 'California Soul', as it was the cut that was played over and over on the radio, back in the day. Recently, I was watching a more recent movie on TV, I think it was the remake of 'The Italian Job', and I heard this really hip version of the song. I watched the credits at the end of the movie, to see whose version of 'California Soul' they used, thinking it was some new, slick, songstress. I was shocked to learn it was 60s-70s soul singer Marlena Shaw
On the Carole King and Gerry Goffin penned "Go Away Little Boy", she tries to run off a man to avoid a potential extramarital affair (Almost a decade later, she would revisit the song on her 1977 Columbia Records album "Sweet Beginnings"). She brings emotion and feeling to the Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil orchestrated ballad "Looking Through The Eyes Of Love". As great as this album was, it was her last album for Cadet- as she would move Blue Note Records. This album remains her most celebrated work- . Marlena Shaw is a singer's singer and while she may not have gotten her just due, "The Spice Of Life" serves as her career defining album
