Lee Wilson – ‘A Lonely Boy’ / ‘If I Would Lose You’ – USA 884 (US)
Gorgeous Chicago soul from the obscure Lee Wilson. Both sides penned by Wilson with Charles Colbert, Jr. of The Daylighters (who, with his father, Colbert, Sr. was involved in the Nike, Tip Top and Mellow labels) and Marshall Neal, who together with Tony Gideon composed, sang and played on many top tunes out of Chicago at this time, not least A.C. Reed’s ‘Boogaloo Tramp’ (Nike 2002).
Lee Wilson’s only other record, it would appear, is the equally excellent ‘Knockin’ For A Second Chance’ (P.M. 1076; also on Black Kat 176297 in possibly a slightly different version) recorded at plumber-turned-producer Neal Hemphill’s tiny studio in Midfield, Alabama (home of Frederick Knight’s million-selling ‘I’ve Been Lonely Too Long’ and many rare sides by artists such as Sam Dees, David Sea and veteran Roscoe Robinson).
A note about the flip: one reason why the ‘If I Would Lose You’ is rarely heard is that on many copies of this record the B side plays ‘It Used To Be’ by Jimmy Burns, another Colbert production originally released as by Jimmy Burns & The Fantastic Epics (Tip Top 14). Closer inspection reveals that both records carry the same matrix numbers, CAC 14-B, written in the same hand! As they originate from the same company, and came out at the same time, it’s easy to understand how this happened. The best way to tell the difference is to check the run-out grooves. The Lee Wilson song (at 2:56) is much longer than ‘It Use To Be’ (which clocks in at 2:17), thus the writing occupies a smaller area; otherwise the matrix number is roughly the same size. This, however, is a bona fide original with the correct flip. Top copy of this rare record, don’t miss it!
