This sale offers a unique opportunity to obtain the Mahler symphonies in one convenient purchase. This LOT provides 16 LPs contained in 9 separate LP albums.

This is a marvelous way to hear the Mahler symphonies 1-9. The bulk of the performances presented here (nos. 1-7) are by the late maestro and Mahler specialist Claudio Abbado. This renowned conductor never recorded No. 8 on vinyl, while his No. 9 is a very rare LP item - that if ever available on eBay, fetches well over $100. To round out this collection therefore, two other fine DGG recordings have been selected: Mahler’s 8th by Raphael Kubelik, and the Herbert Von Karajan Mahler 9th. Each of these recordings has been highly acclaimed over the years – making this all-DGG Mahler lot a true feast for the ears!

There's no doubt that the Chicago Mahler recordings by Abbado (symphonies 1, 2, 5, 6, 7) are much better played than his remakes with the BPO. The orchestra simply plays/sounds better - and Abbado’s ideas and insight in this music are truly interesting. The recordings done with the Vienna Philharmonic are also outstanding. Of the 3rd, one reviewer wrote, “the power, youth, passion and tenderness are all rendered with profound love: humans just don't play and sing like this without feeling deep love. This recording is an eloquent testament to the recording art and performing art. I shall treasure it all my life.”
