Description

LED ZEPPELIN – Led Zeppelin ORIG Atlantic LP (Turquoise Sleeve) / 588 171 (UK, Stereo, 1969)

Happy to present a very 1st UK press of this milestone rock LP – the beginning of something very special and here with the original 1st press turquoise lettered sleeve, the uncorrected matrix and the ‘Superhype’ label credits.

Matrices (uncorrected): Side 1: 588171 A//1   1   1   2    Side 2: 588171 B//1    1   ?   1

It’s very important when purchasing this LP to check the matrices for the TRUE UK 1st press.  This LP was released with the ‘Superhype’ label credits in a transitional press which had the later orange lettered sleeve and the corrected matrices.  THIS IS THE 100% AUTHENTIC UNCORRECTED FIRST PRESS BOUGHT A FEW DAYS AFTER RELEASE HERE IN THE UK IN EARLY 1969.  (GUARANTEED!!)

The single format fully laminated sleeve was made in the UK by MacNeill Press Ltd.  Obviously this component is a major part of this true 1st press and I can bring it to you in a genuine and true VG+ (Very Good Plus) condition.  Many would grade this Excellent or near as there’s not that much wrong with it.  The front shows a couple of corner creases to the top left, some laminate lift along the spine edge and around 8 crescent shaped ‘thumb’ creases close to the opening edges on the right side.  There is light but inconspicuous ring impression.  There is also a strip of laminate lift to the rear, only 3 or 4 small creases to this side  and some general (but light) signs of handling.  Other than these, it’s quite a strong example – no real edge wear, good strong spine (all lettering intact and legible), no splits, tears, writing, stickers.  Corners are still very good and it lies flat with no rippling or bends.  Nice sleeve.

The original Superhype plum/orange Atlantic labels show vibrant colours with no tears, dirt, stickers or residue. There is however the previous owner’s name written neatly on Side 1.  Spindle evidence is light to moderate and hard to spot under normal light.

The sharp medium weight vinyl has been examined under bright light and also in broad daylight.  Visually it grades VG (Very Good).  In normal light it looks fantastic but under closer examination there are several light and fine scuff marks, quite a few thin hairlines and a few small surface (non-sounding) scratches.  That is not to say it is at all beat up and worn – it isn’t but it does show visual signs of age. IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO THROUGHOUT and I’m happy to report the play grade comes in at a true EX (Excellent). Bar some light surface always under, never over, the music, there is no snap, clicks, loud pops, hiss, distortion or loss of clarity/lack of definition.  This is a really super listen and you can tell from the sheer power of the record that this press is the 1st one, close to the master – just sounds awesome!

The story started here.  This is one of the very oldest and rarest pieces of Led Zeppelin vinyl still around.  Don’t miss out!

No reserve.

PLEASE TAKE SOME TIME TO UNDERSTAND MY GRADES!

I do not use any more than ONE plus or minus between grades.  After all, WHAT ON EARTH DOES VG+++++ MEAN?  What is NM+? Or EX---?   These are just some of the ridiculous gradings I’ve encountered on eBay.  I am very careful using the EX (Excellent) grade.  Excellent, by dictionary definition means‘extremely good’ NOT ‘marked and slightly beat up with wear’!
