Description

ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This remarkable LP from Columbia (ML 4857, US pressing, gray 6-eye label, mono – no stereo edition exists), features the great Louis Krasner, the dedicatee and first performer of the two seminal Twentieth Century masterpieces on offer here: Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto ‘To the Memory of an Angel’ and Arnold Schoenberg’s Violin Concerto Op. 36.

The exact discographic details are as follows:

Alban Berg: Concerto for Violin and Orchestra

> with violinist Louis Krasner, conductor Artur Rodzinski and the Cleveland Orchestra

(rec. at Severance Hall, Cleveland on 15 December 1940)

Arnold Schoenberg: Concerto for Violin and Orchestra Op. 36

> with violinist Louis Krasner, conductor Dimitri and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra

(rec. at Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York City on 1 December 1952)

These recordings are not only immensely important historical documents, but also richly musical experiences and landmarks in the discographies of these respective works. Both conductors, especially Mitropoulos, were dedicated exponents of contemporary music, and there is a palpable missionary zeal to these performances, particularly when Krasner’s playing is imbued with such visionary and haunting intensity – one of the truly great LPs from the Columbia catalog.

Incidentally, the striking cover art preserves Paul Klee’s “Ausgang der Narren” (1930), from the collection of F.C. Schang.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is discoloration to the both the front and rear panels, as well as slight bumping at corners and a small bit of writing and a sticker to the rear panel. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, and still quite striking in appearance – overall, a very good collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not always CD silent, in general the playback is quite superb, close to near-MINT. However, if you must have a flawless or MINT copy, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a truly excellent collector's copy.
