redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This superb LP from Telefunken (SLT 43038, German pressing, black/silver label – ED1, stereo, original inner sleeve included) features Joseph Keilberth and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra's exhilirating renditions of Mozart's Symphonies No. 40 in G minor K. 550 and No. 41 in C Major K. 551 "Jupiter", both recorded in the warm acoustics of the Kulturraum, Bamberg on 18 and 19* July 1959. These are performances that can be spoken of in the same breath as those by Bruno Walter, Josef Krips, Otto Klemperer, et al.

The underrated Keilberth was a remarkable musician, one now enjoying critical reassesment following Testament's issue of his transcendent 1955 Bayreuth Wagner 'Ring Cycle'. Hopefully, this will lead to further re-issues from Keilberth's large and highly distinguished discography. His Mozart is revelatory, and the Telefunken engineering is superb throughout.

Wrote the eminent critic J.N. in his review for the May 1961 issue of The Gramophone:

"Reviewing a package-disc of lightweight Mozart by the same forces last March I felt the style of both performance and recording to be just a little on the heavy side, but for the last two symphonies it is absolutely appropriate. These are vigorous, straightforward performances, entirely without gimmicks or eccentricities, but by no means without character. Tempi seem to me quite outstandingly well judged. In the G minor the first movement is not (as so often) sluggish, nor the finale scrambled. What is more, the recording is exceptionally clear and firm, with a reverberation that to my ears sounds just right. Perhaps the contrapuntal texture of the Jupiter's finale could be a shade more transparent, but this is really the only criticism I have to offer from the point of view of the recording. This is a disc that would be extremely competitive even if it were in the higher price-range; as it is, it is far better than its only rival—the coupling of the same two symphonies by Vandernoot and the Paris Conservatoire. Outstandingly good value."

There are insightful liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in both German and English. The lovely cover art reproduces a detail from an early drawing (also uncredited) of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor bumping at corners, as well as mild ringwear and discoloration to the rear panel. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings, and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
