In the Wake of Poseidon is the second studio album by King Crimson. By the time this album was released, the band had already undergone their first change in line-up, however they still maintained much of the style of their first album, In the Court of the Crimson King.

Greg Lake (going on to Emerson, Lake & Palmer) agreed to sing on the recordings for In the Wake of Poseidon (negotiating to receive King Crimson's PA equipment as payment). Eventually, he ended up singing on the band's early 1970 single "Cat Food" b/w "Groon" and on all but one of the album’s vocal tracks. The exception was "Cadence and Cascade", which was sung by Robert Fripp's old school friend and teenage band mate Gordon Haskell.  At one point, the band considered hiring the then-unknown Elton John to be the album's singer, but decided against it. Other former members and associates returned – as session players – for the Poseidon recordings, with all bass parts being handled by Peter Giles and Michael Giles performing the drumming. Mel Collins (formerly of the band Cirkus) contributed saxophones and flute. Another key performer was jazz pianist Keith Tippett, who became an integral part of King Crimson's sound for the next few records.

The album opens with an a cappella piece called "Peace – A Beginning", which is reprised instrumentally in the middle of the album and vocally again at the end. "Pictures of a City" was originally performed live, often extended to over ten minutes and was called "A Man. A City". An example of such a performance can be found on the live album Epitaph. The longest track on the album is a diverse instrumental piece called "The Devil’s Triangle", which was built around quotations from Gustav Holst's "Mars: Bringer of War" from his The Planets Suite. King Crimson would have called the piece "Mars", as they had performed it on tour in the 1969 line-up, but were forbidden by the composer's legal estate. In 1971, a brief excerpt from "The Devil’s Triangle" was featured on the BBC television series Doctor Who. Also, the track samples the chorus from "The Court of the Crimson King", the title track from the band's first album, a studio technique known as xenochrony.

The album cover to this Crimson masterpiece is called The 12 Archetypes or The 12 Faces of Humankind. The colour pictures were painted by Tammo De Jongh in 1967. The album was re-released with a near complete new stereo mix by Steven Wilson and Robert Fripp. As tape for one track, "The Devil's Triangle", could not be located, the original stereo was included instead. Later releases on vinyl cd or dvd would include alternative mixes but none to rival the original first press mixes found on this classic vinyl.

ALBUM PLAYED FOR GRADING:

IN THE WAKE OF POSEIDON is a complex and varied collection of music, and is also a very sensitive piece of vinyl, hard to find in clear audio condition. Worn copies can have a lot of surface sound even on musically complex and busy tracks like 'The Devils Triangle.' This pressing has amazing bright undistorted audio, with super clear sound. There is certainly no dominant interference, NO loud pops, clicks or distortion. It really sounds great and plays with great sound separation and clarity!

Superb sound, every track has been tested and I could find no obvious sound blemishes. Wonderful TOP audio, there is NO distortion, NO sticks or jumps what so ever, and little static between the tracks. certainly no loud pops, and certainly no distortion what so ever. I will give a detailed account below:

Starting with 'Peace - A Beginning', this has to be one of the quietest intros of any album, and a very difficult piece to collect, given its sensitivity. I am delighted to say that this is an outstanding example. There is some static in the first five seconds and then after the it plays all the way through with super clear audio. Amazing brightness and clarity. It plays with great bright sound. The quiet section of 'Pictures of A City ' sounds amazing with just some light static and a few tics. Again its a real test on this album due to its many layered quiet sections sings but this really is stunning. The long quiet section in 'Cadence and Cascade' again plays really well, with a single pop in the middle and just some light static and a few tics. There is a single pop between tacks and then 'In The Wake of Poseidon' plays perfectly rounding off a terrific side 1.

'Cat Food' starts off side 2. again with great audio, this ultra quiet track again playing with great uninterrupted sound. There is some static during the ultra quiet introduction but the music is crisp and clear. The quiet section at the end of the track is really clear, and then bursts into the superb 'Devils Triangle'. The very long quiet section of 'Devils Triangle' also plays very cleanly, with some light occasional static and a few static tics. Playing on, Holst's epic, 'Mars, the bringer of War', the sound is amazing. 'Merday Morn' and 'Hand of Sceiron' also play superbly, and the long quiet section before 'Garden of Worm' plays with virtual silent. The opening bars of 'Peace - An End' come in with very little surface sound. This is such a  difficult track and this press really plays superbly, with no loud pops, clicks and certainly no distortion what so ever. The sound is amazing, and for such a quiet track it really plays beautifully, incredibly clear for a track that is so sparse.

Great music with great clarity, and so hard to find with this type of sound. The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, the vocals which come through with tremendous power, and for such a complex piece thats really noticeable. Its the same with the bass guitar and drums, whilst the guitars come through crisp and clear. The tonal quality make this a sensational pressing. With the clear and extra loud First cut engineering giving the audio a vibrant sound which cannot be beaten. A 1st ever press, this is an outstanding 1st pressing of this iconic Crimson masterpiece!

A great all round example of this classic vinyl. Staggering first (stereo) mix, unlike the re-issues which lack the impact. A great all round example of this great vinyl. Great Audio, this is a great listening pleasure.

Graded at EXCELLENT to NEAR MINT.

THE RECORD – VISUAL GRADING

This is an immaculate piece of glossy vinyl, and a really thick pressing. Deep clear grooves that can only be found on the original early pressings, this vinyl has been barely played. Under a spot light it does have some faint sleeve removal marks, but they are ultra light and have no effect on the sound what so ever.

This stunning vinyl has been played very carefully and only a few times, and shows no groove wear what so ever. Unbelievable to think this vinyl is over 40 years old!  This is a stunning example of this ultra rare 1st pressing.

Graded at NEAR MINT.

THE LABELS

The 1970's  colours of the ISLAND label are only found on original pressings. All the colour on this example is outstanding, deep and un eroded, and there are no tears, writing or sticker marks on these all important and so rare UK  labels.

Famous 1st press labels, with no  writing, and virtually no discernible spindle wear. Only  a single tiny ultra faint spindle traces can be found on each side.

Great all round deep coloured examples.

Graded at NEAR MINT.

VINYL TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING:

Yes, NONE visible what so ever when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.

THE COVER

The album cover to this Crimson masterpiece is called The 12 Archetypes or The 12 Faces of Humankind. The colour pictures were painted by Tammo De Jongh in 1967.

This is an outstanding  original 1st press unlaminated  Gatefold cover, ONLY found on original UK first pressings! Gatefold format, unlaminated, matt finish and highly textured.  Printed in Great Britain by the famous E J Day. The Matt finish covers of this Crimson classic are very prone to wear. Heavily textured and coloured they usually come pretty knackered with extreme scuffing and colour loss to the edges and the faces.

Its so hard to find copies of this album that are not blighted by even light ring wear and marking. The rich colouration makes it ultra prone to damage and discolouration. This is a great example in EXCELLENT condition. There is virtually NO light wear around the edges and NO fading. Very little in the form of creases, there is NO writing, NO edge wear and no rips, tears, splits or any other damages. The only real wear is to the spine and its still great all round example with some light wear only. Some slight corner wear and a couple of very light crease this is a great example with no ring wear and all the colours rich and un faded.

Any serious collector will easily know that original press In The Wake of Poseidon covers are irreplaceable. Made out of unique and totally un miss able matt textured card with a colouration that is unique to the first press UK editions, they are un mistakably different to all later pressings. Not having the advantage of being laminated, these covers usually faired pretty badly, with serious ring wear and destruction to the edges. The Spines are nearly always flattened, worn and torn. Not this one!

This original press cover has no serious faults, with only minor signs of wear.  There are no rips or tears, and no creases or wear at the opening. The opening edges are square and un frayed.

The inside Gatefold has no obvious marks marks, with just some very light rubbing in places. A SUPERB Excellent all round example.

Graded at EXCELLENT to NEAR MINT.

THE INNER

Original poly lined 'Made in England' inner sleeve in superb condition.

A stunning example with very little wear. Crucially, there are NO splits to the sides. There are NO tears to the front or opening edges, which are nice and crisp. There is very little impression of the album, which is very rare. Minimal discolouration around the edges, as clearly shown in the images.

All in all a really great and ultra rare example. Comes of course with a new white inner sleeve.

Graded at EXCELLENT PLUS to NEAR MINT.

RARITY

Any Pressing of In the Wake of Poseidon in decent condition is rare. The vinyl is so often played so much, heavily marked, scratched, with noisy, poor and distorted sound. Any early examples with a record in this type of condition, that plays so well, is very rare. What is certain, any early copies will blow away the later pressings that followed from 1970. The cover is almost impossible to find without serious wear, even modestly worn examples are scarce.

Finding a 1st Ever Matrix press, with a great cover like this, bright labels, with a stunning piece of vinyl, and an undamaged inner sleeve makes this an unbelievable rarity!

Great UK pressings of In the Wake of Poseidon  are becoming increasingly rare. Finding a 1st ever press that sounds this clear is unbelievably rare. The sound is just so variable on these vinyls, and this ones sounds incredible. You would be hard pressed to find a 1st pressing that came near to this in sound quality. All of this with the ORIGINAL Inner Sleeve!!! SUPERB! All that, and this is a 1st pressing, makes this a true rarity!

SCRUPULOUS EXAMINATION and TESTING:

All our records are play tested on highly sensitive equipment to ensure the sound quality and accuracy of description. We aim to give a precise and concise description of the sound, pointing out the slightest defect so that you know exactly what you are buying. We aim to describe all records as accurately as possible, and offer a full refund on return if for any reason you are not completely happy with the item description.

VINYL SOUND - PLEASE NOTE:

Highest quality vinyl with clear sound is rare, and what we always aim for. We only sell records that play with TOP AUDIO performance; super clear sound uninterrupted by hiss or other interference. Even with the cleanest pressing you will find occasional static or occasional light tics during playback, caused by a build of dust in the grooves. This is clearly different from the distortion, loud pops, repeating tics or clicks that are found on heavily played and worn pieces of vinyl. Any static build up will reduce when played, and we advise a light clean between plays for optimal performance.
