Utra-rare record with a 1920s or 1930s recording of this brilliant avant garde work by the earliest modern western microtonalist. This historic artifact is probably the first ever recording of an experimental microtonal composition and features unique microtonal instruments Carrillo himself designed. The performers are the 13th Sound Ensemble of Havana directed by Cuban violinist Angel Reyes. Highly recommended beautiful and alien sounds!

artist info from album notes etc.:
Mexican composer, tuning theorist, violinist, and conductor Julian Carrillo first began exploring microtonality in 1895 and devised the term "el sonido trece" ("the 13th sound") to refer to microtonal intervals and the discarding of the traditional 12 tone scale. His first microtonal compositions came in the 1920s, when he worked with Leopold Stokowski and devised a new notational system to accommodate his music; he went on to develop several new instruments including a the octavina for eighth tones and the arpa citera for sixteenth tones (96 tones per octave). Carrillo's work is one of the earliest and most important contributions to the modern microtonal music tradition of Ivan Wyschnegradsky, Harry Partch, Alois Haba, Ferruccio Busoni, Henk Badings, Lou Harrison, La Monte Young, Ben Johnston, Glenn Branca, Terry Riley, Charles Ives, John Eaton, James Tenney, Easley Blackwood, Emil Richards, Teo Macero, Tony Conrad, Rhys Chatham, Pauline Oliveros, Alvin Lucier, and Joe Maneri.
