Description

I have been an obsessive collector of vinyl LP's and singles for many years, and from the very first I have always been very careful about the condition of the records I have bought. Once in my posession the records have been well stored and always very carefully handled. If the records have been played at all, it has always been on a good quality hi - fi system, the deck being a Linn LP12 deck with a top of the range arm and cartridge.

As a result, most of the many thousands of items in my collection are in excellent condition or better.

Now, in order to create more space at home, I have decided to cut the collection back to a core of my personal favourite artistes, and to dispose of the remainder. These I intend to list for auction over the coming months.

For auction here is an exceptional item, one of holy grails of the Beatles/John Lennon collecting market, an unbelieveably rare copy of the 45 rpm vinyl single, credited to Musketeer Gripweed and the Third Troop, which is actually a John Lennon alias, entitled 'How I won the war/Aftermath', on the United Artists label, catalogue number 'UP 1196'. This pressing dates from 1967, so its slap bang in the centre of the most productive and innovative period of the Beatles history.

This copy is the very much rarer 'stock' copy, most are demos.

It comes with the no outer sleeve which is in pretty normal for this record, although I have kept it in a clear plastic sleeve to protect it. The vinyl is in great condition, bright, shiny, and no sign of any marks that I can see under edgewise lighting. The labels are clean and in splendid condition apart from one very small (1.5mm) area of wear on the 'B' side on a high spot. visible on my photograph of the 'B' side. There are few if any signs of 'spindle-hole' wear that I can see and I would reckon this copy has hardly ever been on the turntable.

I must mention that there are two very small white spots on the 'B'side, one on the run-in groove, and another about 1/4 way into the track. I am not sure what these are, possibly some impurity in the vinyl mixture or the residue of some unknown powder-like deposit. I have tried hard to capture these spots in one close up picture. I have not attempted to remove these spots for fear of damaging a very rare item, and in any event my Linn plays straight through these with no effect at all that I can tell, so its not much of a problem accept for the purist from a purely visual persepective. I can put the record through my cleaning system if the buyer decides they would like me to do this.

Overall I'd rate this in Ex condition and it plays really nicely.

So there it is, one of the great Lennon rarities, and a great copy which has obviously seen very few plays.

Note: in accordance with eBay rules if you pay by foreign currency and the transaction attracts a charge to convert this to UK Sterling 4.5% will be added to the invoice charge to cover this. If you have a problem with this then please do not bid.

See my feedback, and bid with confidence - and good luck. This auction is going to make some lucky bidder very happy!

It is offered at No Reserve and with a low opening bid price considering the rarity of this single!!
