“The Holy Grail of Dead Shows”

Contains poster and extensive notes.

This show is as much a part of Grateful Dead history as any you’re ever likely to hear about. But, it was never intended to be. It was, on the surface, just another show on another tour during another year of live Dead shows. They’d been touring for over a decade. But, May 1977 saw something crystallize among the band. There was certainly a consistent, high caliber, level of playing nearly every night in May 1977. Several shows in April and the first week of May saw the Grateful Dead playing lights out versions of several of their most beloved songs. Jerry Garcia was also using a particularly dialed in setup for his guitar work. I count myself among those who believe his guitar never sounded better than it did on this tour. But on the 8th of May, during an otherwise “normal” night for the Dead, the playing that night seemed to pop in ways none had before. It seemed too perfect at times. Almost rehearsed, but so fresh and smooth so as to consistently hammer home the reality that these musicians were playing live, improvised music that would mesmerize listeners forever. The recording of the show is thankfully impeccable. That’s part of why this show has always been celebrated & relished by fans. It sounds utterly awesome. It’s got a punch to it.

Almost unsurprisingly, the concert has impacted so many people it was selected for preservation in the United States Library of Congress. Our nation might fade or fall, but whatever is still standing will have this concert to enjoy!

The music has been meticulously remastered and engineered as a part of this featured release. The CDs and stream are worth the price of admission just to have the best sounding version available. But, the vinyl is the best, a real investment that pays dividends. There will never be a better sounding releases than these first pressing exclusives.

Assuming you are intent on taking great care to safely play & store the vinyl, there are few live releases, & none from The Grateful Dead, more worth adding to your treasured collection

The music is going to move you.

I’m more than happy to use whichever shipping method you prefer. Obviously media mail is the best deal, but just let me know prior to paying what you’d like and I can adjust the invoice.
