Hallowed 1-sided westcoast LP with Jeff Simmons (Mothers of Invention); mature post-flower power psych sounds that are every bit as good as the legend would have you believe. Opens with 9-minute epic psychrocker that sounds quite a bit like D R Hooker, then a shorter track with dual fuzz/wah-wah raga interplay, and finally another extended moody tripout. Comparable to Bob Smith and Wizards From Kansas as a transition piece from the great ballroom 60s sound into the equally great epic early 70s big ego-psych style of D R Hooker, Garrett Lund, etc. Strong, understated vocals and some of the best use of piano around gives a 1970s flavor, while the guitars and overall feel is moody 60s acidelia. Recorded as early as April 1968. Each copy came with one of four different promo photos. Press size reports differ. In a combination of status, rarity and quality this is probably the heaviest title out there that has never been reissued.
Thanks to The Lama (PL) from the Acid Archives for the description. Check out his book on US psych, out now.
-- From Wikipedia: Jeff Simmons is a musician and former member of Frank Zappa 's Mothers of Invention . Simmons provided bass, guitar, and/or vocal for Chunga's Revenge (1970), Waka/Jawaka (1972), Roxy and Elsewhere (1974), You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore, Vol. 1 (1988), You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore, Vol. 6 (1992), and Playground Psychotics (1992). Jeff appears in the Zappa movie The True Story Of Frank Zappa's 200 Motels (1989).
<p>
Jeff's group Easy Chair was discovered by Frank Zappa in 1968 when they played a show together in Jeff's home town, Seattle, Washington. Easy Chair went to Los Angeles to audition for Zappa's Bizarre and Straight record labels. But the group broke up before any official recordings were released. The one sided LP on sale here was recorded for demo purposes only.
Simmons released two solo albums on Straight. He co-composed the soundtrack for the biker film Naked Angels (1969). His second album Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up (1970), featured Zappa as producer. Zappa wrote two songs and played lead guitar on the album. Jeff Simmons' most recent work is Blue Universe (2006).
-- From the United mutations site: From Tim Scott, August 2004: * Proir to Easy Chair , Jeff was in another psychedelic era Seattle band called " Indian Pudding & Pipe ." (I was almost on the same bill with Easy Chair and Juggernaut at a Volunteer Park Be-In in about 1969--that's where I first saw Jeff perform--he sang a strong version of "Crossroads" and played a German-made Framis electric bass.)
* Easy Chair was discovered by Zappa as winner of a Seattle Battle of the Bands at The Moore Egyptian Theater. The prize was a recording contract with Straight/Bizarre Records. When Easy Chair broke up (by the time their band got to L.A, there was only Jeff and Burke Wallace left), Zappa produced Jeff as a solo artist & then installed him as bassist with the Mothers.
