Description

DIZZY GILLESPIE and His Orchestra "AFRO" Original 1955 Norgran MG N-1003 Mono US Deep Groove Pressing

BEAUTIFUL David Stone Martin cover art!

Vinyl is NM- / VG++ Nice gloss, looks unplayed, faint scuffs visible in bright light, comes with white paper inner sleeve which is not original, I think these came with the thin rice paper sleeves that often fell apart or were discarded. Yellow labels are CLEAN, no spindle marks. Jacket is graded NM- with very faint signs of shelf and edge wear, the worst of which is clearly visible in my pics. There's also a slight bubble where the cover slick wasn't glued down properly but it was impossible to photograph, basically a "factory flaw" that I had never noticed until I started taking the pictures as it's difficult to see when looking at the jacket head-on. Not everybody agrees about how to grade LP's so PLEASE look at the pics closely, they are detailed and accurate, I've included a couple extra pics of the cover so you can get a clear idea of the condition. I think you would be hard pressed to find a cleaner copy. Years ago I acquired a bunch of LP's on the Clef and Norgran labels. They all came from a man who worked at the label in the 1950's, I would assume he was given one copy of everything that was released while he worked there as he had quite a few. He was not a Jazz dude at all and I don't think he ever played any of these records, this Dizzy LP came from that batch. Please check out my other auctions for more from this same lot.

I grade as accurately as possible based on the standard Goldmine Grading Scale, landing on the conservative side when in doubt.

This is a "no reserve" auction starting at $9.99 so let the chips fall where they may!!!

FROM ALLMUSIC: Pairing Dizzy Gillespie with Cuban arranger/composer Chico O'Farrill produced a stunning session which originally made up the first half of a Norgran LP. O'Farrill conducts an expanded orchestra which combines a jazz band with a Latin rhythm section; among the participants in the four-part "Manteca Suite" are trumpeters Quincy Jones and Ernie Royal, trombonist J.J. Johnson, tenor saxophonists Hank Mobley and Lucky Thompson, and conga player Mongo Santamaria. "Manteca," written during the previous decade, serves as an exciting opening movement, while the next two segments build upon this famous theme, though they are jointly credited to O'Farrill as well. "Rhumba-Finale" is straight-ahead jazz with some delicious solo work by Gillespie. A later small-group session features the trumpeter with an all-Latin rhythm section and flutist Gilberto Valdes, who is heard on "A Night in Tunisia" and "Caravan." Both of the Latin versions of these pieces are far more interesting than "Con Alma," as the excessive percussion and dull piano accompaniment add little to this normally captivating theme. Long out of print.
