Description

THE DON RENDELL - IAN CARR QUINTET : DUSK FIRE

A truly excellent copy of this extremely rare and highly sought after 1966 UK 1st pressing modern jazz classic on the black & blue COLUMBIA label

and part of the LANSDOWNE series, MONO SX 6064

 Matrix Numbers :

Side 1  XAX 3133 - 1U with stampers "1" and "R" at 9.30 o'clock and 3.30 respectively

Side 2   XAX 3134 - 1U with stampers "1" and "R" at 9.30 o'clock and 3.30 respectively

The appearance of the heavy duty vinyl is brilliant! Completely flat with beautiful lacquered sheen and clean, clearly defined grooves throughout. Held at the right angle under a bright light and I could just make out a few, small and sporadic paper scuffs and a couple of of the wispiest hairlines but these are negligible. Truly excellent condition vinyl and that's a conservative opinion.

The labels are near perfect. The raised "K" and "T" tax codes are clearly visible on the side 1 label. I could just make out the faintest of a very small, single spindle trace on each label (and that was only under a bright light), and there is the faintest of a very small abrasion on the side 1 label but as the photos testify these "blemishes" really are negigible.

The iconic front-side laminated Garrod & Lofthouse outer sleeve is excellent. There is barely any scuffing at all on any of the edges, including the spine, all of which remain rigid and devoid of creasing. There is not even any laminate creasing - incredible for a 51 year old antiquity such as this! There is just some very mild (and barely discernible) laminate lifting on the bottom edge along with a very small nick. There is no fraying on the opening side either though there is 1.5cm of very light vertical edge scuffing at the bottom of the front opening edge. The corners remain well defined right angles with barely any rubbing or scuffing, and the spine is a delight - rigid with all text completely intact. There are just two horizontal 1cm laminate creases adjacent and perpendicular to the spine but they are barely noticeable. The reverse side is similarly excellent but as you can see from the photos there is a little grubbiness on the flip backs and just the hint of some very mild age discolouration towards the opening edge. With some careful love an attention this hint of "grubbiness" can probably be removed even though none of this is particularly intrusive anyway. And, of course, the wonderful colouring on the front cover remains as rich and vibrant as ever.

Finally, the quality of the audio is superb. Great tone and clarity throughout, with no distortion or interference even at higher volume and on the higher frequencies. There is the odd nano second light pop of static and just the hint of some very, very mild background crackle at the beginning of each side - nothing really and I'm sure that this could be eliminated completely by a good clean to remove any dust in the grooves from decades of storage. No skips, crackle, interference, or distortion - just great listening throughout with five icons of jazz at the top of their game (Don Rendell - Tenor & Soprano Saxes, Flute, Clarinet; Dave Green - Bass; Michael Garrick - Piano; Trevor Tomkin - Drums; Ian Carr - trumpet & Flugelhorn). A terrific listen throughout and no wonder this 1st press vinyl is so highly sought after...this really was a golden era for British jazz.

The tracks are :

Side 1 :

1. RUTH

2. TAN SAMFU

3. JUBAL

4. SPOOKS

Side 2 :

1. PRAYER

2. HOT ROD

3. DUSK FIRE

Comes with original poly-lined inner sleeve with no splits or tears and still fully functional - excellent. I always supply a new plain white inner as a matter of course.

In summary a truly excellent copy of this extremely rare and sought after 1966 UK modern jazz 1st pressing classic - there can't be many better condition copies of this cherished 1st pressing than this one and certainly worthy of gracing any serious vinyl jazz collection.

If you require any further information, including photos, then let me know and I'll do my best to oblige.

If this record interests you then take a look at my other 60's & 70's classic vinyl listings.

bit about myself : I have been collecting vinyl for more than 48 years and have amassed a huge collection covering a varied genre, but mostly of 1960's and 70's origin. Most of my records were originally bought by myself for my own collection, but over the years I have embellished my collection by buying records from a variety of sources : friends/acquaintances, car boots, auctions, and even through putting up a "vinyl wanted" notice in my wife's shop! I never intended selling any of my records but now I am retired and a combination of space requirements (caused partly by duplication) and a need to help fund my retirement has prompted me to "rationalise" my record collection and sell many of my much loved gems.

My ebay feedback speaks for itself so rest assured that you are buying from a trusted seller and in the very unlikely event that you are unhappy with your purchase just e-mail me and I'll sort out the problem. I offer a "no quibble" refund policy

On the subject of postage, I take great care in the packaging of all items, using a proper vinyl cardboard mailer along with at least two cardboard stiffeners. I take great care in separating the record from the outer sleeve in order to help prevent sleeve damage in transit and I always insert the vinyl, outer sleeve and inner into a clear plastic sleeve, thus adding further protection.

For this item postage & packaging will be Royal Mail 1st class, tracked and signed for  : UK £5.00, continental Europe £10, and Rest of the World £15.

I do discount post & packaging costs for multiple purchases. I do NOT profit from postage.

Good luck with your bidding! Richard
