 No, your eyes are not decieving you . YES, it exists .

In August of 1971 Tony Defries had pressed 500 BOWPROMO LPs to give out to radio stations in the USA and the UK to

promote Bowies forthcomming LP Hunky Dory . Adam Kinn son of the late great Maurice Kinn ( google him , eveyone from Elvis

to Sinatra owes him a career ) was working as a sound engineer at RCA at the time . Adam told me he recalls the day when

the Bowpromos arrived at the office . He was promptly told to bin them , a full stack !  Adam had savvy enough to keep a handfull

for himself.

   Weeks Later 3 of these Bowie Preview LPs showed up , and Adam got 2 of them . I bought this off Adam about 10 years ago .

Defries had these pressed and insisted on a sleeve with info on the artist due to the fact that the Bowpromo was totally ignored .

The sleeve we all know had not been decided upon at this time and it was thought that this sepia Shot of Bowie was to be the final

Sleeve so Defries had a handfull of these made to send to important people in the industrie who Defries thought could get the world

talking about David Bowie`s great new LP . This was pressed October 19th and Hunky Dory came out a month later in December .

As you can see its on the Maiman owned Gem Record Label . If you double click the label photos you can see the Gem adress , and

even the Gem Phone number .

Its as if Defries was urging record execs to phone and get in touch !

It comes with a generic white sleeve with the David Bowie hunky Dory preview Pressing and date all wrote in hand .

Below that is all the info song titles song times + recording info in type .

The ORIGINALLY INTENDED SEPIA  PEVIEW SLEEVE  is well documented on website + books for instance the David Bowie story .

Here it is in its complete gatefold form with pockets to house tons of info , ie reviews and interviews on the artist .

Please note , these are not music newspaper clippings but carefully and purposely chosen (probably by Defries)

single sided and purposely printed information papers .

As you open the gatefold at the bottom (double click the pictures) you can see all the relevant info on Both sides of the gatefold sleeve,

and the Gem adresses ,Phone numbers and Telex numbers ( Defries was desperate for the right people to get in touch) .

Also it has printed on the inside towards the bottom Chrysalis LTD ( who own RCA)

Gem Music production ( owned by Defries`s MainMan company) Bowie thought he owned it Mainman  . Bowie was wrong .

Below that is RCA records and tapes.

Condition:

The sleeve has rubbing to Bowies forhead but it hardly shows and dosent spoil the look of this great and truly rare item .

Also there are signs of ware to the edges but is quite clean and acceptable throughout .

The record has lots of hairlines but plays entirely without jumps or skips or sticking . Obviously there is some surface noise

but it dosent spoil the listeners enjoyment of the record . The labels look great .

In my 34 years of seriously collecting records I have only ever seen 7 Bowpromos and I know Adam Kinn ( he had three)

seriously they are that rare , just ask yourself , how many have you seen ?

In all my life I have only ever seen 2 of these . Theres some info on The EXELLENT Bowie Website Teenage Wildlife but it so minimal ,

And their item pictures are totally incomplete . If you need any more shots TW get in touch !

So id grade it overall as Very Good ++

It plays really well .

Sometimes , and its oh so rare , when the condition of an item is outweighed by the sheer rarety of an item .

Like the Beatles white album ,  numbers 1 to 10 valued at £10,000 and in Record Collector magazines own words "regardless of condition" !

Think about that for a minute , a record so rare that condition dosent matter !

I think we have that here , THE CONDITION HERE IS TOTALLY OUTWEIGHED BY THIS ITEMS RARETY ! 

The Very Good ++ grading is an added bonus and totally acceptable !

Today I was asked for a more detailed description of the actual record.

I am forced to re grade the LP to a very strong EXELLENT condition .

When I first wrote the listing the record was viewd under a dim 60 watt bulb.

The LP has only one hairline that has no baring at all on the playing of the record .

The record shimmers like a mirror and has a super high lustre .

Under the brightest light we have here it looks fantastic.

8 line poem.Slight crackle at the start Very Good ++ 8 out of 10.

Life on Mars . plays EXELLENT 10 out 0f 10.

Quicksand. Plays EXELLENT 10 out of 10.

Fill your heart. Smallest amount of crackle at the start . EXELLENT 9 1/2 out of 10.

The condition of the sleeve is Vey Good ++

The condition of the vinyl is EXELLENT.

Adan Kinn phoned me last night and asked a great question.

He said "Alan, why is there so little interest and so few bids on the Bowie album" ?

I said Adam were up against it here because its an unknown quantity . Theres nothing to compare it to.

I said even after this auction ends it will still take record collector about 5 years to put this in their book.

Their that slow they even refused to recognise eBay untill only recently. This item is so rare it should knock

the Bowie collecting fraternity on its arse , a Major , MAJOR piece !  So all the relatively new collectors will

have no knowledge of this. So were left with the big boys who know me and recognise EXACTLY what we have

here and they leave things untill the last minute . Its their way.

 10 out of 10 , HUNKY DORY , it top of the tree . I mean this is not Lets Dance .

If it were we would not have 164 watchers .

Ziggy or Dogs or Low might get close , but this is the one the fans would choose HUNKY BLOODY DORY !

This is BOWIE`s highest peak in terms of songwriting .

The winners gonna play this to death with pride .

RARETY :

10 OUT of 10. During Adams call last night he told me that he knew Tony Blackburn was given a copy of this,

and that would make total sence . Back in 71 Blackburn was the BBC disc jockey presenter of the Breakfast Show .

(the breakfast show has the biggest UK audiance in the UK 15 million a morning) . He played changes regularly and in

the new year (Dory came out in December) he made Changes his record of the week . Meaning it was played daily at 8 am

at the audiances highest point of listeners . Despite this grand effort by Tony Changes still flopped . Testament to Bowie being

ahead of his time. Defries was ALSO ahead of his time because the UK never started using Radio Station promos untill 1973 .

Ever wonderd why you will never see a UK DJ Promo of Ziggy or TMWSTW chronilogically such a thing dosent exist .

Do you see now how important the PREVIEW PRESSING IS ? Even those words PREVIEW PRESSING ( how American ?

Just like Defries) , put a time scale to this great piece .

Would you not agree , that considdering the easy access to the worlds best record shops and websites and the endless amounts
