·         COMMENTS / ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: AMAZING FIND! SUPER-RARE stunning private/DIY live jazz by group of young Bostonians! Blends spiritual jazz, jazz-funk/rare groove, hard bop and free-jazz elements. Performed as a musical worship service.

Though there’s very little information about the album online, it has gained a lot of attention recently, after a copy was discovered by some serious diggers in trumpeter Stanton Davis’ storage unit and being featured on Egon’s NPR music series.  It’s quickly becoming A HOLY GRAIL among jazz and funk collectors!

Here’s why:

First, THE PERSONNEL – Septet led by obscure drummer/percussionist Minister Freddie W. Gabriel, with six young Boston-area college students. Features FOUR FUTURE PROS, all of whom possibly are recorded here for the first time:

1)    DAVID S. WARE (tenor sax).  Legendary free-jazz pioneer - identified here as “Dave Ware” – known especially for his work in the Cecil Taylor Unit in the ‘70s, as well as his work as leader and sideman performing with a vast array of the elite in the jazz avant-garde until his passing in 2012.

2)    CEDRIC LAWSON (organ).  Brilliant and funky, later recorded with Miles Davis (“On The Corner” among other albums), Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Larry Young, David S. Ware, Jimmy Ponder, Isaac Hayes and others.

3)    MILTON MARSH (alto sax).  Stalwart of the Boston-area music scene with a deep, edgy sound; recorded a killer and highly-coveted album on Strata East (“Monism”) in the mid ‘70s (includes Lawson as a sideman).

4)    SAM ALONGI (trumpet).  Bright-toned, technically superior hard-bopper with avant-garde leanings, he later became a regular member of famed jazz-rock/fusion horn band, “Lighthouse”.

Second, THE PRODUCTION – DIY across the board. The recording is raw and low-fi – apparently recorded with a single microphone.  The cover is startling on the front, plain on the back, and it’s hard to guess what the music is like by looking at it.  The song titles aren’t identified on the cover OR the labels.  The back cover indicates that the group was formed in 1967 comprised by Boston-area students, and performed three worship services early that year. I’m guessing that the album was recorded shortly thereafter – because according to the artists’ online bios they were students in the late ‘60s, and the intro talks about the memories of Martin Luther King, Robert Kennedy and Malcolm X (so it would have been no earlier than 1968).

And as a bonus THIS COPY IS AUTOGRAPHED BY GABRIEL (NOTE – the autograph reads “First Album 1974”, but that’s almost certainly the autograph date and NOT the release date).

Third, THE RARITY - Not sure how many were pressed but it couldn’t have been many.  The fact that there was no mention of it online prior to Egon’s feature on NPR suggests tiny quantities.

Lastly, THE MUSIC – rather than describe it, here are several excerpts which should give you a flavor:

LP GRADING GUIDELINES

NOTE: All LPs are professionally cleaned using the VPI HW-17 RECORD CLEANING SYSTEM and carefully inspected under a grading lamp with 120-watt bulb.

Guidelines reflect TYPICAL factors determining grade - variations are noted in the description Please note: I DO NOT USE EXCELLENT (EX) as a grade. Flaws for ALL covers graded below VG+ are noted in the description. I rarely use grades below VG, and all vinyl graded VG or less is appropriately spot play-graded to assure sound quality. Grades below G are not listed, as I typically do not sell merchandise in such condition. Intermediate grades (e.g., NM-, VG/VG+, VG++) are used, as applicable.

MINT: Factory Sealed; cover virtually flawless.

NM+  (Near Mint Plus) - Factory sealed with minor cover flaws, OR an otherwise mint LP recently opened by me and played in spots for demonstration purposes.

NM  (Near Mint) - vinyl, cover and labels nearly flawless.

VG+  (Very Good Plus) - what many refer to as "excellent"; pretty close to NM. Full or nearly full-gloss vinyl with a few hairlines, minor surface scuffs and/or sleeve marks; possibly one or a couple small, light  scratches (inaudible or causing unobtrusive soft clicks, noted as applicable in the description) on an otherwise NM piece. Expect only slight surface noise in spots. Cover has slight general wear and/or aging, OR minimal wear/aging and a couple of minor flaws (noted as applicable in the description).

VG  (Very Good) - Vinyl still glossy, possibly with slight graying; has a few or some light scuffs, sleeve marks and hairlines, possibly a few small light  scratches. Expect only slight surface noise in spots.

VG-  (Very Good Minus) - Vinyl typically glossy with slight or some graying; generally has all of the flaws noted in the VG grade to a greater degree (hairlines, light scuffs, surface marks, small light scratches, sleeve marks). Expect slight or some surface noise that's noticeable but NOT overwhelming.

G  (Good) - Vinyl typically still glossy with some graying; generally has some scuffs, surface marks and light scratches, plus lots of sleeve marks and hairlines. Expect some surface noise throughout that's noticeable but NOT overwhelming - NO skips, sticks, heavy scuffs, deep scratches, excessive noise, or loud pops or clicks (unless noted in description).
