Description

A near-mint first UK pressing of Black Sabbath’s classic debut with the earliest and rarest printing of the cover. You can refer to Rare Record Collector’s notes on the different variations, but the main identifiers are as follows:

  • The B-side label has “A Philips Record Product” printed under the Vertigo logo, a large swirl above the spindle hole, and numbered tracks in all caps.
  • The upside-down cross inside the gatefold contains a misprint in the copyright warning at the bottom: “Copyright subsists in all Stereo recordings...” (see pic #5 above). Subsequent versions are corrected to “Copyright persists in all Vertigo recordings.”
  • A-side matrix: VO 6 1Y* 1 420 1 3
  • B-side matrix: VO 6 2Y*1 420 12 16

The vinyl is near-mint. Under a bright light you can see extremely light, diaphanous sleeve marks on the surface, but there are no scratches or notable wear. Playback is perfect, as are labels. The cover is also near-mint. Square and crisp with no creases, splits or wear of any significance. The only small flaws I can find: a touch of shelf wear at the very tip of one of the outer corners; a few tiny white specks in the black background on the inside of the gatefold. Includes the original inner sleeve.
