Description

Seagull Products of Egremont, Cumbria was the firm which, in late 1963, secured the rights from NEMS Enterprises Ltd tomanufacture the official Beatles record carrying case, among other items. (See pic 8, included here for illustrationand information purposes only and not part of this lot.)
It was a highly successful line, and clearly encouraged Seagull to try again with this more generic Swinging Sixties / Mod Look record carrier which used exactly the same forms and process, and is therefore exactly the same size and style as the Beatles carrier. The only difference  is that the images are printed onto the secondary (pink) layer of the double layer outer case rather than having a cardboard picture sandwiched between the two. The handles are exactly the same, and as with the Beatles bag, both of them have the Seagull logo impressed on the inner surface (see pic 7).
It's a clever, very sharp design: one side (sorry, this was pre-sexism) for the girls, with a really cool stylised main illustration of  two groovy Modettes in silhouette, wearing shaggy mohair-type sweaters, ski pants and winklepickers, one with a bob, the other with a Mia Farrow urchin cut, dancing the Block, the Mashed Potato or Watusi to the latest soul stomper; while the other side is aimed at the boys with its repeated pattern of a stylised electric guitar - not quite a Gibson: any ideas? - suggesting the great mid-1960s guitar pop of the Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Who, Small Faces et al.
The dayglo pink adds a touch of psychedelia to the mix. My guess is this item dates from 1966-1967. Very nice bit of retro 1960s kitsch. (The colour and styles could almost place it to the punk era - say 1977-79 - by which time mohair and drainpipes and winklepickers were back in, but Seagull was long out of business by then.)
Sides measure approx 8 inches x 9 inches (20 x 23 cm) not including retractable handles. Bottom is 2 inches (5 cm) deep. Contains plasticsleeves to hold 24 singles.
Great condition. No splits around where handles attach to carrier, which is a common issue with this design. Some waving to clear vinyl outer layer, slight discoloration to edge of inner plastic sleeves, a few circular marks to centre of inner plastic sleeves made by single label rims.
