Description

Background:

For sale is one of the rarest Japanese Beatle items out there - the original mono record box containing 10 albums which were pressed and released in limited numbers in 1986 to commemorate the 20th anniversary since The Beatles first (and only) concerts in Japan in 1966. The LPs in this set are renown for the high quality of mastering and their superior sound when compared with the standard stereo mixes.

As these records are individually hard to find, it's very rare indeed to find a complete set like this for sale. But what makes these especially rare is that they come in this original record box of which only a very limited number were made. The box, with its "screaming fans" cover, was produced exclusively for this set by Toshiba-EMI (you can see their logo on the back), and the design was never used again. Moreover, according to Jason Anjoorian's "The Beatles Japanese Record Guide", most of these box sets were broken up by record sellers at the time so that the albums could be sold individually, making the full set including the box near impossible to find today.

The set:

Over the past 15 years I have owned 2 of these sets, both of which I bought in Tokyo. The first, which was in decent but not fantastic condition, I sold a few years ago. This set is in far better condition, and includes 2 items probably even rarer than the box and exclusive to this release.

1)A colorized, 2-sided reprint of the famous “Mersey Beat” edition with the Beatles on the cover. These were included with some of the mono box sets, and a set is not truly complete without it.

2)A 60-page promotional booklet put out by Toshiba/EMI to promote their “20th Anniversary of Japan Concert” series releases. This booklet is extremely rare, and is hardly ever seen today even in Japan. It contains a history of the band and their releases in Japanese along with band photos and a complete Beatles Japanese discography. It even briefly makes mention of this mono box when discussing the 1986 reissues. This was purely a promotional item and was never for general sale.

Condition:

-All the LPs are in Mint condition. There are no surface marks of any kind on any of the discs.

-All of the covers are in Near Mint to Mint condition. There is no ringwear and corners are sharp, having barely been used or taken out of the box over the years. The same for all of the inserts. The White Album poster is unfolded and the photos unused. All records also come with their original red 'obis'.

-The Mersey Beat reprint has a slight bit of wear at the top, but is overall in excellent condition. The booklet is in great condition with no real flaws.

-The box is solid Near Mint. The only notable flaws are some very tiny signs of wear on a couple of the edges and corners, which this box set is susceptible to.

This is one of my most treasured items which I hate to part with but that I now must pass on to a fellow collector.
