DELANEY & BONNIE WITH THE ALLMAN BROTHERS & KING CURTIS AT A&R STUDIO'S 1971 SEALED DOUBLE VINYL LP + MINT CD - 

This (71 minutes) set is from 1971 There's a whole lot to like, and a little not to like. Of the 71 minutes and 15 tracks, there are only 9 songs due to all the stage banter. The music, though, is phenomenal. The first half is all acoustic, which is a real treat. I've never heard Duane Allman play so much acoustic guitar, and his slide really shines, especially on "Poor Elijah" (a tribute to Robert Johnson). The electric section is even better. Greg Allman joins the full Delaney & Bonnie band on piano (they already had a Hammond organist), and King Curtis sits in spectacularly on sax. While the stage banter is, at times, interesting (Delaney's hype for the upcoming Concert for Bangladesh), I wish they would have saved the room for more songs. The DJ promises an hour-plus electric set, but if they played that long, only 5 songs made the album. While some of the detail are a bit puzzling, it does not detract from the overall effect. It's some of the best music I've purchased in quite some time

There's a few sonic glitches along the way but the music comes shining through nicely. The booklet has a very short essay on the concert and the music along with a couple of b&w photos of the band. Is this the best place to hear D&B? Probably not. But if their music is your thing, and if you can find this set. Be aware there's some talk between songs that some fans may not like. But the comments mostly add to the atmosphere of the concert. The whole thing has a relaxed feel--like friends getting together to sing and play some old favorites.

A few highlights. After some ads from concert sponsor Singer, the band begins an acoustic set with Robert Johnson's "Come On In My Kitchen", with Delaney & Bonnie (D&B) on vocals and Duane Allman on slide guitar for a nice easy version of this great tune. Basically the first half of this concert is acoustic based which is fine because the front porch style feel of the vocals along with some fine playing make this pretty cool if you're a D&B fan. Similarly "Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad" is another great version of this well known song. There's a jarring tape glitch for a couple of seconds but once you know it's there you pass over it and listen to the tune. "Poor Elijah" is another fine performance with a down home gospel feel that ends seemingly because the players just felt like it. Sam Clayton played the conga drums along with Delaney on guitar/vocals, Bonnie on vocals and Allman on slide guitar on this acoustic set.

After the acoustic song "The Ghetto" there's a lengthy (6 minutes) announcement before the band comes back for the electric set. Hearing this long musical pause once is enough for atmospheric purposes--Delaney especially sounds very relaxed.. Members of this band (but not all) include D&B, members of Little Feat, Duane Allman on guitar, Gregg Allman on piano, and King Curtis on tenor sax.

Beginning with "Livin' On The Open Road" this is reminiscent of the D&B and Friends band albums. The band has tightened up some which helps the music. "Better Relations" is a nice up tempo performance with slide guitar and horn fills and some good vocals from D&B. "The Love Of My Man" slows things down a bit with Bonnie on lead vocals with some nice slide guitar fills from Allman along with another guitarist. Curtis' tenor sax has some fills that help this tune's soulfulness. After a short "chat" the band get into the blues with a lengthy (7 minutes) "12 Bar Blues (Don't Want Me Around)", with Delaney on lead vocal. King Curtis gets a good solo in that really adds to this tune with more horns in the background comping away. Duane Allman comes in for a solo with some laid back slide guitar sounding like you'd hope. At one point the band lays out letting Allman do his thing. This is one of the best performances here.

Another 2+ minutes "chat" and then the band ends things with a jam on "Only You Know & I Know" which stretches out for 18 minutes. This is one of those times you wish you were sitting in the audience. D&B blend their voices that's reminiscent (if you're a D&B fan) of past performances, and all the while the whole band (including some fine percussion work and a drum solo) works out behind them. Allman gets another chance to play some slide guitar here and there along with a nice organ solo--not Gregg Allman--who gets in a piano solo later on, and Curtis' always great tenor sax blowing. Sitting in the audience must've been quite something listening to all the great musicians on this long, good time jam.

 As a curiosity from that period when D&B were making some good records, and had a band made up of some of the best musicians of the era, this is worth adding to your D&B shelf to pull out once in a while. The loose, jammy, come-together feel is pretty cool. It's an example of that whole period when musicians came together to play and have some fun playing some favorite tunes. -there's some nice moments.

1969's Home is the debut LP on Stax Records from Delaney & Bonnie-a blue-eyed soul duo comprised of married singer-songwriters Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett. Both artists came from impressive backgrounds (Delaney played with acclaimed songwriter Leon Russell in the house band for the TV show, Shindig!, while Bonnie performed with legendary blues guitarist Albert King when she was just a teenager). Their debut album, Home, featured an impressive lineup of talent, including Russell.

Delaney and Bonnie's down-home classic mixes blues with blue-eyed soul and had a profound influence on Eric Clapton. The album, named after a log cabin in Mississippi, features backing by a cast that includes Booker T and The MG's.

Following their 1969 debut album, Home, the husband and wife duo of Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett expanded their group to include superstars George Harrison, Eric Clapton and Leon Russell.

American singer-song writers and married couple Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett fronted the rock and soul ensemble Delaney & Bonnie & Friends in the late 1960s and '70s. The "Friends" part included a laundry list of legendary performers such as Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, George Harrison, Leon Russell, Bobby Whitlock, Dave Mason, Rita Coolidge, King Curtis, and of course, Eric Clapton.

The duo signed with Stax in 1969 and released their debut album, Home. Despite excellent production and session assistance from Isaac Hayes and Donald “Duck” Dunn, the album was not commercially successful, suffering similar distribution woes as other Stax albums of the late 1960s and early '70s. Delaney & Bonnie signed with Elektra Records for their 1969 follow-up album, Accept No Substitute. Despite not selling well, it created a buzz in music industry circles and caught the attention of George Harrison who offered D&B a contract with Apple Records. The duo signed with Apple despite their prior commitment to Elektra. The Apple contract was voided, causing tension between the group and Elektra. They were eventually released from their contract in late 1969.

At the behest of Harrison, Eric Clapton took Delaney & Bonnie & Friends on the road in mid-1969 as the opening act for Blind Faith. Clapton became good friends with Delaney, Bonnie and their band and preferred their music over what he was doing with Blind Faith. Impressed with their live performance, he would often join them on stage and continued to record and perform with them following the demise of Blind Faith in August of 1969. Clapton helped get the band a record deal with his then-US label, ATCO Records, and even performed on their 3rd album: On Tour with Eric Clapton. The 1970 US Release would be their most successful release (#29 on the Billboard album chart) and achieved RIAA gold status.

Released in 1971, Motel Shot is their 4th studio album, their 3rd release for ATCO Records and their 5th album overall. The album’s title refers to the impromptu, late-night jam sessions that touring musicians would get into while on the road. The album reached #65 on the Billboard album chart and includes Delaney & Bonnie’s biggest chart single, "Never Ending Song of Love," which peaked at #13. Guest musicians on the album include Leon Russell, Joe Cocker, Duane Allman, Dave Mason, John Hartford, Clarence White, Gram Parsons and Bobby Whitlock. The performances are mostly acoustic and the song choices are mostly traditional gospel, blues and country standards. Eight of those impromptu, acoustic jam tracks are included on this deluxe Run Out Groove edition.

plus DELANEY & BONNIE & FRIENDS MOTEL SHOT SEALED CD - Though they never achieved the popular success enjoyed by some of their peers, Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett spearheaded the roots-rock revolution of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s along with The Allman Brothers and The Band, turning away from the exoticism of psychedelia towards music “rooted” in blues, country, and soul. Witness the fact that the “And Friends” that played with the pair included Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Leon Russell, Dave Mason and Bobby Whitlock….out of Delaney and Bonnie’s various aggregations arose Derek and the Dominoes and Joe Cocker’s band for the legendary Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. And for Motel Shot, the duo’s fourth studio album and their third for Atco/Atlantic, the circle of “friends” included Cocker, Whitlock, and Mason, plus appearances by Duane Allman, Gram Parsons, and John Hartford among others! But for the most part, this is a largely acoustic, charmingly informal affair dipped in gospel and dominated by the Bramletts and Whitlock; the Motel Shot title refers to informal, after hours jam sessions on the road. But there’s a whole lot more to the story (and to this release!). The project began not in a hotel room but in the living room of engineer Bruce Botnick, with November 1970 sessions as a prospective release for Elektra Records. But, after Delaney had a falling out with label head Jac Holzman, the project moved to Atco, who put the “band” into a proper studio to re-record much of the material. Those later sessions comprise the original album, which has heretofore only appeared briefly on CD in Japan; but, after hours of tape research, co-producers Bill Inglot and Pat Thomas uncovered the original “living room” sessions that yielded the eight unreleased tracks on this Expanded Edition CD release – and notably is the first American CD release of the original Motel Shot album as well. Remastered by Inglot, with an essay by Thomas that includes exclusive (and extremely candid) quotes from Bonnie Bramlett, Bobby Whitlock, Bruce Botnick, and Jac Holzman, Motel Shot finally is presented here the way it was originally conceived, and takes its rightful place as one of the great albums of the classic era of the roots rock movement.

The married couple and musical duo Delaney & Bonnie ignited critics, fans and famous musical colleagues to veritable bursts of exultation. Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones talked matter-of-factly of "convincing white gospel song," while Eric Clapton regarded the duo as the "best pop band in the world." Clapton's enthusiasm went so far that he invited the pair to accompany him on a peaceful tour of Europe and was booed by German fans because he stood in the background as a mere accompanist and did not play any solos.

The master of the guitar may have had good reasons for staying out of the limelight, if one is to believe the Chicago Daily News, who declared that Delaney & Bonnie were better than Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles together.

Indeed the combined voices in the arrangements are so closely knit that there is not a millimeter of space between the singer and backing. In "Hard Luck And Troubles," a dry cantankerous groove, the vocals cling to a sinewy bass line, criss-crossed by short chords on the organ. Gospel is celebrated spiritually, yet not too much so, in a rocking, rhythmic and dense interplay between the soloist and chorus. And what is more: the great ballad, hovering above a vibrating carpet of sound on the organ ("The Love Of My Man") and crisp, firm winds ("Alone Together") are included in this exquisite collection of great and even great songs.
