Here are some reviews:
While not nearly as inspired or consistent as its DIY cousin Broken Bow & Idabell, the best moments here offer a bluesy acid-folk vibe. If one can get past the occasional looseness that makes this seem more like a lost ESP-DISK release than an offering from the usually stoic Vanguard, tracks like The Holy Modal Rounders - inspired "Alligator Man", and the loner-folk wail "Build Your Wall" make this strange collection a keeper.
Gosh. This one's not at all easy to pigeonhole. I'd say it's a strange album, which it is, but that's going to be misleading. It isn't so much the music that's strange (although there is some of that, particularly the numerous, highly experimental free-ethno interludes all over the place), but the juxtaposition of influences. Neil Young, a bar band so drunk they have no business playing music, traditional early folk, unedited studio chatter, psych folk, Safe as Milk, the Byrds, Uncle Meat, and shouting. A lot of shouting.
It's wildly inconsistent, as you'd guess, and it's grating more often than it ought to be. But it's pretty compellingly weird, particularly for 68.
Worth a listen.
Wherein two possibly marijuana and alcohol influenced dudes, with the help of some fun overdubbing, come up with something of a genre-hopping classic. Now, I've gone and given you the wrong idea already - i'm not talking big time studio overdub 1968 trickery here...nor am I talking dilletantish style fooling. Everything on here is as raw as you'd like and twice as natural sounding. However we do get to here the guys as an actual band with bass and drums and we do get to hear those two harmonicas simultaneously and we do get the interludes...
In here you might hear Tim Buckley, you might hear ISB, you might hear Beefheart...hell, you might hear....Tony Joe White. The genre hopping is, errr, 'roots' genre hopping - swamp, folk, bluesy...they cover a lot of ground and just make it all seem so natural 'n' easy.
God - this is such friendly, funny stuff...and all done with an ease and suredness that it just flies in the face of it's almost complete obscurity.
Wonderful <:o)
