·       BEATLES –  THE BEATLES MONO COLLECTION (A 11-LP/10-ALBUM BOX SET) - EMI/Parlophone MONO LP SET BMC-10 (ALSO KNOWN AS THE 'RED BOX')  – ULTRA-RARE ORIGINAL 1978 BRITISH RELEASE (THIS IS  NOT A SWEDISH OR AUSTRALIAN MADE-FOR-EXPORT PRESSING)

·       ORIGINAL U.K. PRESSING

·       This one of the rarest Beatles items worldwide. Almost rarer than; dare I say the 'Butcher cover' (BY MEANS OF COMPARISON: ONLY 17 COPIES (GIVE OR TAKE) OF THE ORIGINAL 'RED BOX' TRADED ON THE OPEN MARKET IN THE PAST 10 YEARS, OR APPROXIMATELY 1 EVERY SEVEN MONTHS; DURING THIS SAME PERIOD, SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 2,000 AND 3,000 AUTHENTIC 'BUTCHER COVERS' (GIVE OR TAKE 200) WERE SOLD;  OR ABOUT ONE NEARLY EVERY DAY) According to Wikipedia, only between 300 and 500 "Red Box" sets were ever made, which could conceivably make this release the smallest press run of any Beatles item released anywhere, anytime.. This is the original U.K. Parlaphone MONO release a stunning RED gilt lettered box. A gem in any self-respecting Beatles collection that is sure to impress in sight and sound alike.. THIS COPY MAY BE THE MOST BEAUTIFULLY PRESERVED SPECIMEN OFFERED IN THE PAST 10 YEARS; SHORT OF FINDING A STILL SEALED COPY (GOOD LUCK WITH THAT), WE DON'T SEE HOW THE CONDITION OF THIS ITEM CAN BE IMPROVED.

·       ORIGINAL HISTORICALLY ACCURATE PARLOPHONE AND APPLE LABELS: BLACK LABELS WITH YELLOW PARLOPHONE LOGO ON THE FIRST EIGHT TITLES, SLIGHTLY MODIFIED TO AVOID CONFUSION WITH THE FIRST PRESSINGS (UP TO AND INCLUDING 'SGT. PEPPER'), APPLE LABELS ON THE REMAINING THREE TITLES ('WHITE ALBUM AND  YELLOW SUBMARINE.

·       EXTREMELY LIMITED (BUT NOT  NUMBERED) EDITION OF ONLY 300 TO 500 KNOWN COPIES

·       BETWEEN THESE 10 LP ALBUMS, THIS BOX SET CONTAINS VIRTUALLY THE ENTIRE RECORDED BEATLES POST-DECCA AUDITION TAPES U.K. MONO STUDIO OUTPUT BETWEEN 1963-1969; ONLY THE SCATTERED SINGLES, B-SIDES AND 'MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR' ARE MISSING; THE TWO ALBUMS NEVER RELEASED IN MONO IN THE GREAT BRITAIN (ABBEY ROAD AND LET IT BE, OBVIOUSLY COULD NOT BE INCLUDED IN THIS MONO-ONLY SET)

·       THE ‘WHITE ALBUM’ COMES WITH ORIGINAL INSERTS: FOUR BONUS COLOR PHOTOS WITH A LARGE POSTER; THE VERSION OF THE WHITE ALBUM POSTER INCLUDED HERE IS HISTORICALLY ACURATE ‘UNCENSORED’ UK VERSION, NOT THE “NEUTERED” AMERICAN VERSION; THE 'WHITE ALBUM' IS EMBOSSED (THE TITLE IS 'RAISED') BUT NOT INDIVIDUALLY NUMBERED; STRANGELY, THE SGT. PEPPER INSERT IS MISSING AND IS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN LEFT OUT OF THE PACKAGE INTENTIONALLY (PROBABLY AS A COST-CUTTING MEASURE)

·       RARE ORIGINAL BRITISH–ONLY WHITE ALBUM POSTER WITH A TINY SECTION OF PAUL McCARTNEY’S “PRIVATE PARTS” UNCENSORED. THIS (ALLEGEDLY “OFFENSIVE” BACK IN 1968) AREA WAS NEATLY AIRBRUSHED ON AMERICAN VERSION (YES, EVERYBODY’S GOT SOMETHING TO HIDE, EVEN PAUL AND HIS MONKEY); ALSO: THIS ORIGINAL UK POSTER HAS UNCENSORED ABSTRACT HAND DRAWING OF JOHN AND YOKO’S PRIVATES INTACT) (FOR THE ILLUSTRATION OF THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE U.S. AND U.K. POSTERS ►CLICK HERE (AND THEN SCROLL DOWN TO THE MID-PAGE)

·       THE MONO PRESSING OF 'SGT. PEPPER' INCLUDED HERE CONTAINS THE INFAMOUS “SUBLIMINAL” DEAD GROOVE AFTER THE ENDING OF “A DAY IN THE LIFE”, CONTAINING REPETITIVE NONSENSICAL / DADAIST PHRASE, ONLY FOUND ON BRITISH/EUROPEAN VERSIONS OF THIS ALBUM;

·       ALL ALBUMS IN THIS BOX ARE BRITISH VERSIONS (NOT AMERICAN); WHEREVER THE ALBUM WAS ISSUED ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ATLANTIC WITH IDENTICAL TITLE, IT IS FEATURED HERE IN BRITISH VERSION, WITH DEDICATED BRITISH MONO MIXES AND BRITISH TRACK SEQUENCE (‘ A HARD DAY’S NIGHT’, ‘HELP’, ‘RUBBER SOUL’ AND ‘REVOLVER’)

·       THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC, FIRST  U.K. PRESSING; THIS IS NOT A REISSUE, AN IMPORT, OR A COUNTERFEIT PRESSING

·       .ORIGINAL, 2 INCH THICK CARDBOARD BOX

·       ORIGINAL "TEXTURED" (LINEN-LIKE) SLIPCASE (BOX)

·       CLEAN, WEAR-FREE LABELS (NOT A SPINDLE MARK TO BE SEEN ANYWHERE!!!)

·       DISTINCT 'XEX' PARLOPHONE MACHINE-STAMPED MONO MATRIX NUMBERS IN TRAIL-OFF VINYL (DEAD WAX) OF THE RECORDS (ON 'SGT. PEPPER' AND 'YELLOW SUBMARINE'  THE MATRIX STAMPS ARE ENDING WITH - 1: APPARENTLY, FOR HESE TWO TITLES, EMI/PARLOPHONE DECIDED TO GO BACK TO THE ORIGINAL '60s STAMPERS!!!)

·       FAIRLY THICK VINYL PRESSING On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the thickness of the vinyl as 7.

·       ALL ORIGINAL ANALOG MONO PRESSING

(PLEASE SEE THE IMAGE OF THE COVERS, LABELS OR BOTH, SHOWN BELOW)

Released in 1982, The Beatles Mono Collection is a boxed set of all Beatles' albums which were originally issued on mono LPs in the UK (Please Please Me to Yellow Submarine). EMI reportedly pressed a total of 10,000 copies of each reissue mono LP for sale individually. An unknown quantity of unnumbered red boxes (sometimes reported to be between 300 and 500) were issued in the UK, while 1000 numbered black boxed sets were assembled and issued in the United States by the Dutch East India Trading Co.  The same LPs were issued in Japan in 1986 on red vinyl, also in a limited edition box set. The band's last two albums Abbey Road, and Let It Be were not included as they never received a mono LP release in the UK. The boxed set also did not include the Magical Mystery Tour album. The album had been released in the United States in 1967, but it was not counted among the group's official catalogue because it was not issued in the United Kingdom until 1976.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW IN WIKIPEDIA.ORG)

A set of the Beatles' ten British MONO studio albums (THE COMPLETE UK MONO  DISCOGRAPHY, MINUS EP'S AND NON-ALBUM SINGLES). All albums were pressed on their original labels (EMI/Parlophone or Apple) and with their original catalog numbers. The LPs are encased in a gorgeous bright red textured cardboard box with a fold-open top and gilded print. The set's title and facsimiles of the Beatles autographs were embossed on the front of the box in gold lettering. The set containes:

·       1 - Please Please Me (MATRIX STAMP ENDING WITH -3 / 2N)

·       2 - With The Beatles (MATRIX STAMP ENDING WITH -8 / 8)

·       3 - A Hard Day's Night (MATRIX STAMP ENDING WITH -3N / 3N)

·       4 - Beatles For Sale (MATRIX STAMP ENDING WITH -5 / 3N)

·       5 - Help! (MATRIX STAMP ENDING WITH -3 / 2)

·       6 - Rubber Soul (MATRIX STAMP ENDING WITH -6 / 5)

·       7 – Revolver (MATRIX STAMP ENDING WITH -3 / 4)

·       8 - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (MATRIX STAMP ENDING WITH -1 / 1)

·       9 - The Beatles (White Album) (MATRIX STAMP ENDING WITH -2 / 2 /-2/-4)

·       10 - Yellow Submarine (MATRIX STAMP ENDING WITH -1 / 2)

·       PLEASE NOTE: YOU MAY NOTICE THAT ‘MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR’ IS, SOMEWHAT COUNTERINTUITIVELY,  MISSING (THE ALBUM WAS INDEED RELEASED IN MONO IN THE U.K.). THIS IS NOT BECAUSE THIS SET IS INCOMPLETE (ALL VOLUMES ARE INCLUDED HERE, NOTHING IS MISSING) BUT BECAUSE MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR WAS NOT ORIGINALLY ISSUED IN THE GREAT BRITAIN AS A 12-INCH LP ALBUM UNTIL MANY YEARS LATER (IT WAS ORIGINALLY RELEASED AS A DOUBLE EP), SO ITS INCLUSION IN THE BEATLES MONO LP COLLECTION WAS APPARENTLY CONSIDERED TO BE OUT OF PLACE, PROMPTING EMI/PARLOPHONE NOT TO INCLUDE IT IN THIS SET.

·       The bidders should note that the UK mono mix of this album and the standard US stereo mix (mind you, the White Album was NEVER released in mono in the United States) are MASSIVELY DIFFERENT and in more ways than one. The following is the partial list of differences between UK mono mix and US stereo mix as compiled by Joseph Brennan.

·       REVOLUTION 9

·       Although the mono was made from the stereo, the opening lines are more clear in mono: "I would've gotten claret for you but I've realized I've forgotten all about it, George, I'm sorry. Will you forgive me?". This is evidently a separate piece of tape added during mixing. (Revolution 9 is preceded on the white album by a short song not listed on the album, Can You Take Me Back, which was recorded after Revolution 9 was mixed).

·       DON'T PASS ME BY

·       UK mono version runs faster, and it has more fiddle throughout the song, and different fiddle at the end. The fiddle at the end of stereo on US stereo version seems to a repeat of a bit of the chorus. The edit added the intro.

·       BLACKBIRD

·       The overdubs of bird sounds were done differently during mixing.

·       EVERYBODY'S GOT SOMETHING TO HIDE EXCEPT ME AND MY MONKEY

·       The screaming after "come on" in the last verse are different on UK mono version than on US stereo version

·       OB-LA-DI, OB-LA-DA

·       The UK mono version lacks handclaps in the intro, heard on US stereo version

·       CRY BABY CRY

·       The US stereo version has a drop in sound level during "by the children" in the last verse, probably a tape problem.

·       GOOD NIGHT

·       On US stereo version, the song fades in; on UK mono version, it does not.

·       SEXY SADIE

·       US stereo version has an extra tap at the start. UK mono version lacks bass until the vocal starts.

·       YER BLUES

·       The final edit is done from of two takes of the song, each of the two tapes being itself a mixdown from the original 4-track. The edit causes an abrupt transition at the end of the guitar solos. In stereo, traces of other vocal and guitar parts can be heard throughout the song in the left channel, including something shouted over parts of the vocal and what sounds like another different guitar solo. After the edit, the trace lead vocal suggests we are hearing the first part of the song from the other take. The edit in the mixes added the countdown intro, which is louder on UK mono version; also, UK mono version is 11 seconds longer, with a long fade.

·       WILD HONEY PIE

·       Of the two vocal tracks, one is louder on US stereo version, the other on UK mono version

·       BACK IN THE U.S.S.R.

·       The plane sound effects differ on UK mono version and US stereo version.  UK mono has louder piano, a yell after the opening plane sound, and drumbeats under the closing plane sound.  US Stereo has extra guitar chords at the start of the solo, and shouts and piano during the guitar solo.

·       DEAR PRUDENCE

·       US stereo version has slightly more treble and fades to a lower volume at the end.

·       WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS

·       The Clapton guitar remains loud on UK mono version after the solo break, but not on US stereo version. Near the end of the fadeout only the stereo has "yeah yeah yeah", even though it is a few second shorter than UK mono version

·       HELTER SKELTER

·       The basic song runs about 3:10 to a pause shortly after Paul's distorted vocal, too close to the microphone. UK mono version is then is edited into more of the same take, with sound effects noises, and fades at 3:36. US stereo version is edited instead to a different part of the take, fading out and then back in again, with another edit, ending finally at 4:29 after Ringo shouts "I've got blisters on my fingers!".

·       GLASS ONION

·       US stereo version is lacking Paul's added vocal "oh yeah" at the end of the break.

·       UK mono version has various sound effects, of which only the whistle after "fool on the hill" was used in the US stereo version

·       I WILL

·       The "bass" (vocal) starts later on UK mono version, after the first verse.

·       BIRTHDAY

·       The last "daaaance" starts twice, maybe a double-track error or a leak from a guide vocal, as heard on US stereo version, but covered up by other sound on UK mono version

·       PIGGIES

·       The overdubs of pig sounds differ. The guitar is louder on UK mono version

·       HAPPINESS IS A WARM GUN

·       UK mono version has tapping (organ) on the beat from the start until the drums come in, but it is soft and mixed out 4 beats earlier on US stereo version. In the "I need a fix" section on US stereo version, by error, although the first line was mixed out, the last "down" is just audible.  UK mono version has louder bass in the "I need a fix" section. UK Mono has laughter near the very end, just before the last drumbeat, not heard on US stereo version

·       HONEY PIE

·       UK mono version has the full lead guitar break, slightly shortened on US stereo version

·       SAVOY TRUFFLE

·       UK mono version has sound effects during the instrumental break, and the lead guitar continues through the break into the refrain after it. The organ is missing from the last verse in UK mono mix.

·       LONG LONG LONG

·       Doubletracking starts at the first "long" on US stereo version, the third "long" on UK mono version, and sounds somewhat different thereafter. In mono the rhythm guitar is softer but the lead guitar is louder, especially in the later part of the song.

·       I'M SO TIRED

·       Paul's harmony at the first "You'd say" is louder on UK mono version. The muttering after the song is part of this recording.

·       WHY DON'T WE DO IT IN THE ROAD

·       UK mono version lacks handclaps in the intro.

Some Reasons Why You Should Buy British Mono Beatles Albums:

I.                 These are genuine historical artifacts. Rock & Roll did not produce many works deserving to be called history; albums by Beatles are a noble exception to this rule.

II.            These pressings are coveted by EVERYONE and, despite the fact that Beatles sold almost a billion records, precious few mono albums in good shape remain on the market.

III.        Mono pressings were in print for only short period of time, ranging from only few weeks (Yellow Submarine)  to six years (Please Please Me)

IV.         Mono pressings sound MUCH better and are much more vivid than the stereo versions.

V.              Mono versions contain different versions or mixes of many tracks; in some cases mono versions contain the only "proper" versions of the songs, which are only available only in FAKE stereo on stereo albums.

VI.         Mono versions of the original Beatles albums were specifically approved by the Beatles themselves, while most of the British stereos were after-the-fact releases done by various engineers and without significant input from the Group.

VII.     The UK Beatles mono albums are a terrific investment value, not likely to go the historically evaporate the way Margaret Thatcher, whatshisname Major, whatshisname Blair, whatshisname Brown or whatshisname Cameron did (and will). These fine objects have a durable, lasting historical, artistic and material value.
