This handsome and
extraordinarily rare LP from Epic (LC 3081, US pressing, yellow radial label,
mono) features what is arguably among the rarest of the albums for which the
great Andy Warhol executed the cover art. In addition, unlike some of the other
jackets graced by his work, this particular one even bears the clear
attribution "Warhol" in the lower-right corner.
This album was issued in
1956 as part of the label's Mozart Jubilee series and is highly elusive. It
contains four Mozart Wind Divertimentos with the Wind Instrument Ensemble of
the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under the baton of the eminent Mozart conductor
and scholar Bernard Paumgartner.
The exact contents are as
follows, all works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart:
No. 12 in E-flat Major K. 252
No. 16 in E-flat Major K. 289
No. 13 in F Major K. 253
No. 14 in B-flat Major K. 270
All four works are brought
off with an Authentic Viennese charm and spirited vitality, and the sound is
well-balanced and of Philips' top drawer.
The reverse side of the
jacket carries erudite and eloquent liner notes by Eugene Bruck, printed in
The gradations of condition
I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket
is EXCELLENT. There is wear and discoloration along the edges, though the
discoloration is more pronounced on the rear panel. However, there are no seamsplits,
bends, or owners' markings. The fine laminate finish is perfectly intact and
the album remains solid, bright, and glossy – overall, a very handsome
collector's copy, suitable for framing.
The condition of the LP itself is VERY GOOD. Though
there is light surface noise and a few scattered tics, in general playback remains quite
enjoyable. However, those wanting a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to
look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.
