This lovely LP – a promo copy in a red stereo jacket – from Deutsche Grammophon (138 909, German pressing, white promo label / no tulips, stereo) features the illustrious Amadeus Quartet in magnificent accounts of Mozart’s String Quartets No. 14 in G Major K. 387 and No. 18 in A Major K. 464, both recorded in the warm acoustics of the Beethoven-Saal, Hannover, in June 1963.

The Amadeus Quartet were composed of Norbert Brainin (1st violin), Siegmund Nissel (2nd violin), Peter Schidlof (viola), and Martin Lovett (cello).

The Amadeus Quartet are wholly inside Mozart’s sound world and offer incisive and richly songful playing.

In reviewing their complete Mozart cycle, The Gramophone’s critic wrote:

“The Amadeus have nearly always been at their best in Mozart and Haydn, the execution splendidly accomplished yet without any suggestion of overt display, and, while no interpretations could possibly respond to every aspect of these profound works, it is a compliment to all concerned that quite often while listening again and again to these discs I forgot all about questions of performance and recording and thought only of the music. ...sufficient to state the obvious and say that all Mozartians can safely buy this set, assured of countless hours of satisfaction."

There are splendid liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Hans Otto Spingel, printed in German, English, and French. The striking art is uncredited. The jacket carries a publication date of 7/64.

This album was produced by Dr. Manfred Richter and engineered by Heinz Wildhagen.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the  jacket is VERY GOOD. There is light edgewear, more so at corners. There is also light creasing, but really that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
