Description

Reserve is 24.99$, you may have to bid 24.99$ or more to win the auction.

The famous 1927 electric recording of Rhapsody in Blue with George Gershwin on Piano, nominally conducted by Paul Whiteman, but we have learned, Nat Shilkret actually conducted the performance. With Bix Beiderbecke on the trumpet solos. Original Oval VE Orthophonic recording on  12" Victor 78r pm record.

Condition: A STRONG VERY GOOD PLUS PLUS - clean and unworn, few light scuffs. One tiny nick beginning part II will click mildly twice.

Paul Whiteman comissioned 2 new pieces for his 1924 "Experiment in Modern Music" concert at the Aeolian Hall in New York. Gershwin's Rhapsody, and Victor Herbert's Suite of Serenades (check my other auction for this). Also, standards like Whispering and Pale Moon were produced. This is the first recording of the piece by the original creators of Paul Whiteman's Concert Orchestra.

My theme for this weeks auction is the 1924 Aelian Hall Concert "An Experiment in Modern Music", celebrating the collaboration between George Gershwin, Paul Whiteman and Ferde Grofe, which resulted in the Rhapsody in Blue and Victor Herbert's A Suite of Serenades as original compositions premiered at that concert. It also includes earlier works by Gershwin on George White's Scandals Musical Review.

A series of great  JAZZ Records from early Ragtime to Beb-Bop on 78 rpm Victrola Records

=====

A note on grading Victrola/ Pathe/ Shellac 78 rpm discs:

Pls note that I try to be extremely conservative and consistent in my grading. All records are graded with the same criteria, regardless of genre.

I noticed that my grading seems to be more conservative than what I have seen from other sellers, so here some notes.

Surface VISUAL GRADING:

EXCELLENT - clean and shiny, as new. E minus is the same, with light scuffing.

Very Good Plus - Clean, with a little more scuffing. Some grooves spots may have some light greying. Little if any distortion.

Very Good - a clean copy, some scuffing, some greying on a single groove or a few small groove bands. Enjoyable record, maybe light distortion on some top notes.

=> Everything up to here is a great and enjoyable record

Very Good Minus - May have areas of visible wear, may have some scuffing or lightly dulled surface. Still a great record, but ticks, pops and some distortion.

Good Plus - a worn and scuffed copy. May have other defects separately stated. Plays well, but with noise, may require filtering.

All other defects (if any: Chips, cracks, scratches, lamination cracks, label damage, needle digs) will be stated SEPARATELY.

Paypal or money order.
