Description

No, this is not a dream.

No, you are not hallucinating.

Check the calendar - it's not April 1st.

You now have the opportunity to bid on the ENTIRE RUN of the Sub Pop Singles Club, versions 1 and 2! (with the exception of only one record missing from the second series)

That's right - after years of collecting and gathering over 100 different 45's, I have amassed a nearly complete and entire run of the Sub Pop Singles Club. And it can be yours with the highest bid.

The roster of Sub Pop Records, a Seattle-based label, has included many of the up-and-coming independent rock bands in the Rain City. Sub Pop has also released 45's, albums and CD's by the most popular alternative, grunge and emo rock bands of the past 15 years.

While the major record companies were phasing out their production of 7" 45's, Sub Pop used the format as part of a "Singles Club." By spending $40 for a yearly fee (or $25 for six months), you were guaranteed to receive at least one new Sub Pop 45 every month, a pressing by one of Seattle's new up-and-coming bands. Just as Ken Griffey, Jr.'s rookie trading card was #1 in the initial Upper Deck baseball card series, Sub Pop's first release in its singles club was "Love Buzz," a song by an up-and-coming grunge group called Nirvana.

If Nirvana was the only release on Sub Pop worth collecting, the club would have cinched their place in history. But Sub Pop also released other legendary artists, both through their Singles Club and their commercially available retail outlets. Imagine a record company lineup featuring the Smashing Pumpkins, the Afghan Whigs, Fugazi, Mudhoney, the Velvet Monkeys, the Reverend Horton Heat, Sonic Youth, Urge Overkill, Shonen Knife, the John Spencer Blues Explosion, Ween, Combustible Edison - and that's just the first series. The second session, which ran from 1998 to 2002, featured cuts from the Jesus and Mary Chain, the White Stripes, Death Cab for Cutie, Modest Mouse, Mudhoney, the Quadrajets, Ugly Casanova and many others.

This auction contains highlights from both singles clubs, including Nirvana's "Love Buzz" 45, the first record in the Singles Club series; the White Stripes' "Party of Special Things to Do," the crown jewel of the second series; and much much much more! I collected for quality, and tried to find colored vinyl pressings whenever possible (Nirvana's "Love Buzz," for example, only exists in black vinyl pressings, so I couldn't do much for that). The Pain Teens 45 was released in three separate color variations, white blue and aqua green; I have listed all three of them as part of the collection, as seen below. Same thing with The Anniversary's "My Name is What?" 45 from the second series; it exists in both opaque purple and opaque yellow, and both can be yours with the highest bid.

But wait - that's not all...

Because I don't have the Luna "Everybody's Talkin'" 45, I put in a few "bonus" records, that although they were not part of the original Sub Pop Singles Club, they are collectible in their own right, and should be considered part of any Sub Pop treasury. They include Sub Pop 45's by the Smashing Pumpkins, the Shins, the Beach Boys, Cheap Trick, Sunny Day Real Estate, Hole, the Hype! vinyl soundtrack, and much more.

For your convenience, I have listed every title in the collection, their A-sides and B-sides, as well as a picture sleeve scan, a full record scan, and pertinent information (including pressing runs, matrix messages, whether the subscription coupon, if available, is either attached to the picture sleeve or detached and "included" in the sleeve) whenever possible. I also tried to describe the colored vinyl as well as present images of same; the Sub Pop Singles Club colored vinyl pressings are either "opaque" (solid) "marbled" (several colors are swirled or veined in the vinyl) "two-tone" (contasting colors taking up proportionate edges of the vinyl; see White Stripes, Mountain Goats and Pretty Girls Make Graves for examples of same) or "translucent" (you can see through it).

Okay, you've read the preamble, now for the fun stuff. With the highest bid in this auction, the winning bidder will be the proud owner of everything listed below:

Big Cheese In addition to the sequentially numbered 1000 copies, Sub Pop pressed an additional 200 copies. Now just imagine every record you've seen in this auction in your home. Bid now and it can happen.

Answers to some questions:

Is this someone's idea of a joke?

Nope. This is an honest-to-goodness auction of an "only one record missing" run of the Sub Pop Singles Club.

No, dude, really - are you pulling my leg?

It's all there. Be the high bidder and it's all yours.

Will you send me a sound sample of...

Can't do it. Neither ASCAP nor BMI nor the RIAA will permit me to link sound clips to this auction. I apologize for this in advance, but this is a very special auction and I don't want anything to cause it to get bounced.

Will you end the auction early if I send you some obscene amount of money?

This is an auction, not a set sale. I have set a reasonable reserve on this collection, so as soon as it surpasses that reserve, you'd better get your bids in.

What's a "Matrix message"?

On occasion, an artist or mastering agent will etch a few words into the blank area of a record, between the end of the song and the edge of the record label. The significance of these messages are pretty much up to the artist or mastering agent; I don't think you're going to find the hidden treasure of the Incas by searching through these grooves. Also, the existence of these messages can also confirm a record's authenticity.

How come some of the titles don't match up, as in the releases by the Creatures, Rocket From the Crypt, etc.?

Oh, you must be talking about the ones where the title contains one of George Carlin's "Seven Dirty Words You Can't Say On TV." What I did was replace the offensive word with a non-offensive word that rhymes, and italicized same (i.e., Rocket From the Crpyt's "Where Are the Truckers, as opposed to that other word).

I only need five records out of the set, can I just buy those?

You can buy the whole set and once it arrives at your house, then you can toss out whichever ones you don't want. But no, this is not an opportunity for cherry-picking.

How come this copy is in black vinyl, when I know very well that it exists in a colored vinyl pressing?

I have done my best over the years to acquire legitimate colored vinyl pressings when available. All records are genuine singles Club releases, to the best of my knowledge.

Why in the name of Kurt Cobain's ashes are you selling this collection?

Let's put it this way... I've had this collection for long enough. Christmas is coming. I have bills to pay. It is time to let some other Sub Pop collector enjoy owning it. All I ask is that the eventual winner take good care of these 100+ records, and maybe even listen to them once in a while (there is some good music on these grooves).

How will each record be stored and shipped to me if I win the auction?

Each vinyl 45 has been taken out of the picture sleeve and washed with a special alcohol-based groove cleaner, then wiped with a clean soft cloth. The record was then placed in a high-quality white stiff paper sleeve. I also placed some .28 acid-free cardboard in the original picture sleeve, to preserve the sleeve and prevent folds, ringwear and other damage. The original polybags were removed, as they showed massive signs of ringwear and clouding. The sleeved vinyl, its original paper sleeve (if available), and the picture sleeve were replaced into a protective polyethylene 7-inch clear sleeve bag, with a resealable flap. I placed a sticker on the back of the flap to prevent tampering and to preserve freshness - yes, this borders on anal retentiveness, but don't you want the best quality for your records?

The entire package will be shipped in one large box, carefully packaged and packed to prevent breakage. I thought about shipping the records in four separate Platter Paks, but that would only increase your postage cost.

Do I need to purchase insurance on this collection?

You betcha, binky. Due to the value and rarity of this product, you must purchase insurance on the collection. I will do everything I can to properly ship the collection, but unless you're willing to pay for a plane ticket for me to fly to your city and personally deliver the collection to your house, you must pay for insurance on the collection.

I will also ship the item using the fastest service for which you wish to pay, whether it's priority mail, overnight mail, FedEx, UPS or DHL. Tracking information is also provided.

If you are planning on bidding on this collection from outside the United States, Canada or Mexico, please contact me BEFORE YOU BID so that I can give you the proper shipping costs to your country. I will refund any overages in postage. Also, if the records are to be shipped outside of the USA, I must put on the customs form that the records are a commercial purchase. I will not commit a federal customs offense by listing these as "gift" on a customs form.

Are you offering deferred payments?

Through paypal, I can offer you the option of paying over several months, if you are approved for Paypal Credit. Contact paypal for more information.

Anything else I should be aware of?

Yes. If you have any questions regarding this auction, contact me as soon as possible. This may be your only chance to get a collection as complete as this without having subscribed for years to the company. DO NOT LET THIS PASS YOU BY!

Anyways, good luck and happy bidding!

They have assured me that they will be up very soon. If you visit this auction and see no photographs, simply e-mail me whichever photographs you would like to see and I will send them to you via e-mail.
