BEE GEES FIRST EP /OZ ONLY/HOLY GRAIL/LEEDON MONSTA

Two failed singles into their career, Leedon allowed the Bee Gees this EP, which proceeded to also fail. The un- hip sleeve didn’t help I suppose, coming as it did in Jan 1963 in the midst of the surfing craze and rising Beatlemania. Today, the sleeve is a primary factor in the demand for this item. All of the Bee Gees early EP’s are significant and some are exceptionally hard to find. But make no mistake, this debut EP is in another class altogether. It’s BIG TIME RARE.

The hyper rarity status of this EP is related to it’s tiny print run and lightning fast deletion. All known specimens of this EP lack printing on the sleeve’s spine, conclusive evidence that no copies were manufactured after mid 1964. So there was only one humble production run of maybe a few hundred copies. It’s one of those EP’s that has a high attrition rate ie many of the sleeves have been discarded and don’t turn up with the disc.

This EP has long been considered one of two “holy grails”. The other is their debut LP on Leedon. Although, over the years, the album has historically garnered more publicity, on very good authority I can confidently declare that the EP is CONSIDERABLY rarer than the LP. (A cursory glance at Popsike will prove what I say beyond doubt) Without fear of overstatement, it’s the rarest Bee Gees’s item that was ever commercially available anywhere in the world. Note- it was not allocated a release by Festival’s branch in New Zealand.

Condition wise the vinyl is upper register. Both sides have a little light paper scuffing. They’re comfortably EX and play easily at that level. The vinyl is bright and shiny. The cover has very general light foxing (see scan) and is a bit better visually than it has photographed. There is a seam split at the top of maybe two inches and about two thirds of that at the bottom. There’s a little crease at front bottom right. The labels are M-. All up –the condition is top drawer. The record would be the crown jewel of any serious Bee Gees or for that matter, Aussie EP collection. In this condition, it comes up for sale about once every decade or so. Don't miss out.
