Description

Wil Malone: Fontana 1970 - STL5541

This album will continue to appreciate in value and is a true investment:

To many record collectors Wil Malone is known for his mega-rare solo album. Today copies are changing hand for a substantial sum:
but Wil Malome recalls “it was not greeted lovingly at the time (of it’s release)” Record Collector Magazine issue 375 May 2010

According to Record Collector Magazine issue 382 December 2010 - Despite the credit crunch, collectable vinyl continues to increase in price. Although sadly many record stores have had to close their doors, and younger fans prefer to download their music rather than buy it in a physical format, the appeal of rare vinyl continues to attract record prices on on-line sites like eBay.

You could probably double your money even if you found a mint copy for 1500 pounds, as this LP hardly ever shows up. This scarcity allied to beautifully arranged and sung pastoral rock by Malone just listen to Catherine Wheel – that was hardly distributed and totally neglected upon release back in 1970, makes this album one that will continue to appreciate in value. “I think only me and my girlfriend bought copies. ” Malone told me when RC recently reissued this album on limited edition of 750 copies. And some of these have recently changed hands at 25 pounds.

In that issue  Wil Malone (Fontana STL5541) Ranked at 72 in top 200 rarest records of all time!

About the Album:

This solo effort comprises mellow acoustic ballads accompanied by delicate chamber arrangements and can only have sold an absolute handful of copies. Given that many dealers around the world have yet to see an original copy.

Don’t miss out on this one!

Will Malone is the extremely rare and hard to find psych album from 1970 by Wilson Malone, ex member of psychedelic outfits Orange Bicycle and Motherlight.

According to music industry legend the LP was only available for two months in 1970 and sold approx 200 copies. Less than 30 copies have been known to exist or offered for sale in the past 20 - 25 years.  An original copy sold for 2150 pounds on Ebay in 2008. Released on Fontana, catalogue number STL5541.

This superb record is reminiscent of a psychedelic Donovan but with a more baroque/ pop feel. Using simple arrangements of cello, flute, bass and acoustic guitar Will Malone gently recites his fragile pastoral folk-like songs that are embellished with a beautiful production and the odd subtle studio effect ( such as on the ghostly and trippy “Love in the Afternoon”) A truly forgotten classic somewhere in the no-mans land between psychedelia and singer songwriter.

PS A great writeup on this LP is in the May 2011 issue 388 http://recordcollectormag.com/issue-detail/388 on the 51 Best Investments in vinyl and this LP rates the 4th best on that list.

This LP scarcely turns up for sale and is a bluechip investment which will continue to rise in value!

Grading cover/vinyl

LPS are graded visually and conservatively.

M- Near New

EX+ very clean but not M-

EX(+) Just Slightly off from EX+ but better than EX

EX Though not mint still quite nice cover could have a creased corner or very light. Vinyl visually clean something held back the ex+ grade could be extreme light…

EX(-) At least a visual mark on the vinyl but light in nature and should play ok.

EX- Seam splits, ring-wear, cover wear, small sticker tears etc can come into play. Maybe visual marks (eg scuffs, hairline scratches) there may be some light back…

VG+ More wear on covers and more wear on LPs(multiple marks) Most likely surface scratches. The LP should be able to play without skipping and repeating.

Shipping and Handling

All LPS come packed between layers of corrugated cardboard, plus LP'S are housed separate from sleeves. The LP is removed from cover (except sealed LPs) for shipping to prevent damage.
