In 1959, ABC-Paramount started releasing the recordings of Cliff Richard in the U.S. Richard, saddled with the moniker "the British Elvis" in his early years, had a chart success with "Living Doll" in 1959, and his popularity soared in the UK where he had hit after hit. He remains an institution in Britain, where he is one of the nation's most popular all-around entertainers of all time.
Producer Norrie Paramor knew exactly what he was doing. The heart of the album Cliff Sings lies in the biggest ballads, the warmest strings, the most dramatic arrangements — all the things, in fact, for which the veteran Paramor had been renowned. Cliff expands his horizons on this LP with songs like "As Time Goes By," "I'll String Along With You," and "I Don't Know Why." For the serious rock 'n rollers there's his hit "Living Doll," Carl Perkin's Pointed Toe Shoes," and Doc Pomus' "The Snake and the Bookworm." Cliff knew that if he was to survive in show business, he would need to start adapting to a far wider audience than the rockers would ever allow him to embrace. Cliff Sings was the first day of the rest of his career.
