Description

THE BEATLES - 'PLEASE, PLEASE ME'
This superb example of the their debut album was one of the first gold/black labelled discs off the presses in early Spring 1963.

This example was pressed on EMI's remaining old-type press which had been in use since the mid-1950's and were now being replaced.

A characteristic of these presses was that it produced a distinctive 'groove' around the label, as shown below on PMC 1065 from 1958.

This feature is sometimes found on just one side of this LP, however it is extremely rare to find a disc with the groove on both sides.

Both sides have 1st variation labels with 'Dick James Mus.' publishing credits on tracks 1, 2, 6 & 7 on side 1 and 4 & 6 on side 2.

A 'ZT' purchase tax code is visible in the centre of the side 1 label.

Matrix numbers: XEX 421-1N & XEX 422-1N

Stamper codes: 1/H & 1/H

Vinyl weight: 149g

Housed in the correct, 1st-type front laminated, tri-flipback 'Ernest J. Day' printed mono cover, with 'Angus McBean' credit positioned in the extreme lower right corner. This example comes complete with its original poly-lined inner-sleeve.

CONDITION

Disc

Labels: EXCELLENT +

A 1st-class set with no fading or damage to the delicate gold print on either label, just slight wear to each centre hole.

Visual: EXCELLENT +

Both playing surfaces retain their deep-gloss factory shine with no dulling or clouding to either side. In strong daylight, there is slight whitening to the grooves of the final track on each side, with the only other surface marks being a single light 2cm scuff on side 1 and a smaller, lighter one on track 1 of side 2. Closer examination beneath halogen light reveals a few wispy paper hairlines consistent with inner-sleeve removal, but no scratches or any further blemishes. Both sides of this well-cared for disc lie 100% flat on the turntable when playing and would be a challenge to upgrade.

Sound Quality: EXCELLENT +

Played with extreme care by its original owner, all tracks play with a power and clarity missing from any other pressing of this album. Our single careful play-check at volume detected just a hint of playwear on the final track on each side, but there are no clicks, pops, ticks or any other audible distractions of any kind on this wonderful sounding disc.

Cover: EXCELLENT

A highly respectable example of this delicate cover, few of which survive in anything approaching this condition.

Correctly stored in a clean, non-smoking environment this cover retains a clean, unfaded & unscratched high-gloss front panel laminate bearing a handful of light wrinkles to the upper and lower edges, but no 'thumbnails' or any other significant signs of wear.

There is slight wear to the corner tips and opening edges, but no tears or splits anywhere. The exposed rear panel bears some handling marks but is free from any writing, tears or missing paper. All of the delicate flipbacks are undamaged and fully intact.

Both seams are smooth with no stresses or flaking laminate and the spine is clean & fully worded.

Inner-sleeve: EXCELLENT +

Clean & flat with no creasing or blemishes, just the factory-stacking marks along the lower edge.
