the following excerpt is taken from the four-issue feature for UK Record Collector magazine written by myself and co-author Stuart Penney

Featuring a distinctly out-of-focus cover shot of the band in full 'getting it together in the country' mode, Best Of Traffic was, up to that point in time, surprisingly true to its title.  Here, for the first time on LP (in Britain, at least), were such gems as Paper Sun, Hole In My Shoe and Smiling Phases, plus a gilt-edged selection of tracks from the band's first three albums (but, surprisingly, no Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush).

Since appearing on Mr. Fantasy, No Face, No Name And No Number had mysteriously shed its conjunction, while Forty Thousand Headmen, unlike its numerically designated (ie., 40,000) seven inch counterpart (WIP 6030, Feb. 1968), could no longer be found Roamin' Thru' The Gloamin'....  And how's this for train-spotting?  Dave Mason's Feelin' Alright? (strangely enough, one of only two of his songs included here) inexplicably appeared on both cover and label minus that all-important question mark!

Perhaps because Traffic were strictly non-operational during this period, their first - and best - compilation album sadly failed to chart.
