Label/Format: Parlophone – original format with matt, smooth surfaces. Side two has the embossed ‘K T’ tax codes with both of these fragile detail letters being pristine. Few of these vintage classics retain full ink coverage.

Label Conditions: Both labels are little short of immaculate: very clean, fresh and highly attractive with any spindle marks few, very fine and faint. No wear around the hole and both are collector’s dream-pieces.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. A typical solid weight for it’s era.

Rarity: Rare: this has always been a difficult album to find. Due to delays in being issued, it missed the ‘Summer of Love’ where pop-psych was really in major fashion. Hence sales were poor in 1968 when the psych-boom had faded a little. Finding a copy in this type of condition is even harder, this is a beauty with a super-clean, very little played record. The black and white cover only very gently aged with little fault – just the way I like them. This my very first copy to offer – it has the prized 1 G / 1 R mother and stamper codes – I very much doubt if I will ever see a cleaner, better or earlier made example. This indeed could prove a substantial upgrade for lucky owners of this classic album.

Brief Info: Tomorrow were one of the first of the British psychedelic bands and this was their first and only album. Due to delay between recording and issue, it sold poorly with the psych bubble slowly bursting by 1968 even though it received glowing praise by the critics of the day. Lauded by John Peel, the band were first to play one of his radio sessions in 1967. It features the classic psychedelic single – arguably the best ever – ‘My White Bicycle’ that sold reasonably well but failed to chart. Tomorrow disbanded with Twink briefly joining Pretty Things on their masterwork ‘S.F. Sorrow before forming The Pink Fairies. Steve Howe turned his considerable talents into progressive rock with Yes. This legendary album is now regarded by many as the greatest true full psychedelic album ever made. It was issued in both mono and stereo, and personally I prefer all psych albums in stereo as the channel separation and mix for this style of music is crucial for full affect. A beautifully recorded album and technically up there with the very best with complex effects and sounds. With justice, this would have sold in vast numbers, but it’s failure to do so simply hastened the band’s demise. Seldom seen or offered, this is one of the true giants of the British pop-psych era – a brilliant one-off and in superb condition. For collectors needing this legendary album, not lose it.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and given all the facts of colour (or lack of) and age, this is arguably better. A single format with front laminate, this covers all the closed edges and ends on the back via three external flipbacks. The main back panel is unprotected, matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with the ‘Patents pending’ text. Included is the sepia promotional EMI inner sleeve.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: None Apparent.

Lamination & Front: An attractive front with the laminate retaining fine shine, freshness and clarity with minimal dulling and no peeling. A few fairly gentle half moon surface creases and edge hairlines that few 46-year-old covers will ever avoid. There is a tiny rub and tip crease to the bottom right corner. Any discolouration minimal, yes laminated covers do darken and yellow, but this has minimal traces of either. Viewed normally, full-on, this cover looks lovely and this front will not prove easy to find a great deal better.

Cover Back: Clearly very fragile and wear-prone. The main back panel has little real wear at all. Mildly darkened on the left edge with any traces of grubbiness or set-off minimal and light. There is very tiny speckle traces within the printing or card on this back as seen ultra critically under a magnifying glass, this is purely natural and even my near Mint early Zappa/Mothers albums have it. No creasing and any rim impression hardly even registers. All three flipbacks are solid, neat and undamaged. A few fine laminate hairlines only, the ends clean with no grime-lines and only the odd tiny end burr. Just the tiny rub on the left edge corner tip. Like the front, this back will not prove easy to find better – indeed finding this cover in any condition is hard enough in it’s own right.

Top Edge: Straight and very smooth with just one microscopic surface chip (this going beyond critical). Fully laminated and clean, just tiny tip rubs to the ends.

Bottom Edge: Same again minus any chip, just the rub to the rub to the right corner tip.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal – traces near the bottom – but light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression quite light. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate. A little less smooth with the fingertip test towards the bottom with traces of mega-fine hairlines, this again almost being crazy-critical, but I will mention all I see (and feel), especially on the much rarer items.

Corners: Small tip rubs and one tiny rip crease on the bottom right. That has fine shape, the others very fine or better.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very rare original and seldom seen cover. It gives few clues to it’s considerable vintage – 46 is old for any vinyl record cover. Still very attractive and with no damage or writing, it should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: the original sepia EMI promotional inner is in very fine condition. Unlined, but the discerning owner put a super-soft anti-static loose lining inside, with deep colour and fine freshness. A little gentle fine creasing near the top of the back and one tiny tone spot. A ringed ‘6’is written near one top right corner in pen. All edges unsplit with no repairs, this has the usual ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(+): side one does have some fine surface marks, totally superficial and non-sounding, and grading this less would give a false impression to the beauty of this record. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with lovely shine and freshness. A typical 1960s solid pressing and there are NO penetrating scratches. Indeed I am sure this record has been played very little at all, and few records, that have been played, this considerable age will escape a few gentle marks as a bare minimum. I would be more than delighted if I could find any genuine rare album in this condition anytime. Visually a super record that should please many collectors, being as elusive and scarce as it is, most who need it should consider. It will take a very special example to beat it – and soundwise – this is superb throughout.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Arguably the greatest pure pop-psych album ever made. This is a true classic with brilliant sound, engineering and production. Superb effects, songs and in stereo, it has that crucial separation that I feel benefits all the psychedelic albums. This plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this prized 1 G / 1 R pressing I feel sure. We all know the state such records are normally found in: this on the other side of the vinyl spectrum. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Minor surface marks happen, these do not appear to be stylus created and quite possibly there from manufacture. When visual blemishes have no audio affect, why worry? This is a gorgeous example of a psych masterpiece and nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
