Shadow Music of Thailand

Johnny Guitar

Amazing this Records survival from Big Flood in THAILAND Last Year

The music of Payong Mukda, as well as  Noparatana Tipayaosot (a. k. a. Johnny Guitar),  was known as “Shadow Music”. The term was  in reference to the British instrumental band  The Shadows, who were quite popular  throughout all of Asia. Recordings of this music  were often billed as “Thai Modernized Music“,  taking classic Thai compositions and mixing in  elements of surf guitar, a-go-go music and other  styles to create an entirely new form of music.  Sublime Frequencies “Shadow Music of  Thailand” compilation features tunes by P.M.  Pocket Music, The Son of P.M., P.M.7, Johnny  Guitar and Jupiter.

SHADOW MUSIC was a broad term given to the Thai guitar pop movement of the 1960s and the groups that came out of it, all under the profound influence of early Western rock and roll. British instrumental wonders The Shadows (as in Cliff Richards & the Shadows) were the origin of the genre's title, also coined 'Wong Shadow' or early Thai 'String' music. Shadow records were often marketed as 'Thai Modernized Music' which it was in the truest sense. Traditional Thai melodies were given the Shadow treatment; incorporating rock, surf, a-go-go, exotica, soul, blues, Latin and other worldly styles of the times. Inventive compositions and instrumental genius meet the occasional odd vocal arrangement and the results range from plaintive guitar and organ-driven lullabies to full-blown electric garage folk-psychedelia! Featured on this collection are a handful of the leading recorded artists from the time; P.M. Pocket Music, The Son of P.M. Throughout the 1960s, these groups forged a unique and highly self-referential Thai sound.  This beauties come in a full-color  jacket featuring gorgeous original Thai Shadow LP artwork , so don't sleep on this one.

Shadow Music of Thailand is at its most interesting where the mixture is most explicit.P.M. Pocket Music, the Son of P.M., and a confusing amalgamation called P.M.7/Jupiter. The P.M. groups were named for their manager, Payong Mukda, who kept a cast of musicians recording under different band names. The compiler Mark Gergis tells us that Son of P.M. employed Mukda’s adopted son Kabuan on keyboard, which means that he’s probably the one to the far left of the photograph on Shadow Music‘s front cover with his hair standing up and his eyes staring at the camera as if it might be coming to get him. As far as musicianship goes, he’s not noticeably better or worse than anyone else, so from the modern listener’s long perspective this piece of nepotism seems fairly harmless. Young aspiring Thai pop musicians of the 1960s would not have been so sanguine.

Johnny Guitar

Heeee man. No cha cha crap here bu a totally cool funky garage psych LP from Thailand from the second half of the 60s in cool garagesound. Crude recordings. All instro's with good heavy drumsbanging, beautifull organ garage licks, good guitars and beautifull melodies mixing Western and eastern influences and just bloody rare! What a cool sleeve even holding the band story at the back. This band was one of the first Thai guitar bands and they mixed Thai Classical music with Thai popular a go go music for dancing and listening. Basicly they rocked it up. When playing this I feel like an amrican GI in the 60s ending up in Bangkok in hazes of grass looking with big drunken eyes at a Thai rock band going wyld! Outstanding stuff here . This is the stuff I go for and its insanely rare.

JOHNY'S GUITAR: . (Rosana Thailand)  Oh boy! This is a monster LP from Thailand!  mind bending guitar instrumentals from 1965. One cut turning in to a bonafide haunting psychedelic west coast Asian dream. Others are unique and great instro garage surf rockers. This one is a big big fave which is still almost unknown among garage and psych collector.
