TERRY FOX

 LINKAGE (ACOUSTIC WIRE SOUND) LP

Kunstmuseum Luzern

Book packaging

Museum publication from visual & sound artist Terry Fox, an impressive package of long playing record & accompanying book. Terry Fox researches room acoustics and experiments with wires close to the works of Alvin Lucier and Ellen Fullman.

Some info on the release:  See Broken music book. Very rare original limited edition issue, released in Switzerland sometime in the early 80's on the museum Kunstmuseum Luzern label. In the field of "acoustics" and "space" Terry Fox has also made a significant contribution, quite distinct from that of other endeavors in the visual art, especially those of the Fluxus movement. Terry Fox works with acoustics as resonance, as sound produced by the space within which the resonance occurs. The space becomes a sounding box in which he appears merely as a catalyst for the sounds. Thus he makes the spatial features of resonance and sound visible, on the one hand, while, on the other, transforming space itself with acoustic devices. His material, physical intervention serves only to assist in the creation of these space instruments or spaces as instrument. His person, his body recedes more into the background than in earlier performances. The spaces are given voice and replace the actor telling his story. Thus Terry Fox still remains well within the bounds of the visual arts while opening them up to a vast field-acoustics as a spatial dimension. His work can, of course, also be seen in the light of musical development, though only if it is understood as a rejection of music in the frame of a work with acoustics. In this context, his work is revolutionary as well, since it does not reverse John Cage's slogan, "any sound is music", but turns it upside down. Not "all music is sound"; instead, the entire range of sound as such is not merely music. The installation linkage and the accompanying disc pressed here in Lucerne present an optimally record of Terry Fox's acoustic work in the exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Lucerne. Very close to the string installations of Paul Panhuysen, the long string instrument of Ellen Fullman, Music on a long thin wire by Alvin Lucier or more generally close to the aesthetics of Harry Bertoia, Takis, Gordon Mumma, La Monte Young, Philip Corner, Roland Kayn, Joe Jones, David Tudor, Luc Ferrari.

Terry Fox (1943 – October 14, 2008) was an American video, conceptual, sound, and performance artist. At the age of seventeen, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease, later referencing the cycles of illness and wellness in several artworks. Fox was an important figure in post-minimal sculpture, conceptual art, performance, and video art on the West Coast. Before permanently moving to Europe, he was based in San Francisco in the late 1960s and 1970s. Fox later moved to Liege, Belgium. His seminal series of works (environments, performances, sculptures, drawings) produced over an eight year period was based on the theme of the configuration of the Chartres Labyrinth. He died in Cologne, Germany in 2008. Fox has been included in numerous international solo and group exhibitions including the documenta 5, Kassel, 1975 Whitney Biennial and 1984 Venice Biennale. He had two major exhibitions in Berkeley, his first solo museum show curated by Brenda Richardson in 1973, and one in 1985 organized around the body of works owned by the Berkeley Art Museum organized by Constance Lewallen. His retrospective solo exhibition was organized by the Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel in 2003. He has sound collaborations with Joseph Beuys and Joan La Barbara.

Condition: Vinyl and book+cover lie in excellent condition. Vinyl looks super clean and plays perfectly with the exception of a tiny "spot" on side b: that affects playing for 20 seconds and some minor crackle at the beggining of each side, while cover lies in pristine shape, with minor corner bend (see picture).
