Description

ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This lovely 2LP box set – a beautiful collector’s copy – from Archiv / Deutsche Grammophon (198 381/382, German pressing, silver/blue labels, stereo, full-size booklet included) features Wolfgang Schneiderhan's radiantly pure accounts of Bach's Six Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord BWV 1014-1019, recorded with the great Karl Richter at Wien-Flim, Grinzing, Vienna from 21-27 February 1966 (producer: Dr. Manfred Richter / engineer: Harald Baudis).

These are supremely eloquent and deeply felt performances that can easily be spoken in of in the same breath as those of Grumiaux, Oistrakh, Menuhin, Szeryng, et al.

The production values for this set are extremely high. The LPs are housed in a sturdy cloth textured box, while the deluxe booklet is printed on heavy paper. And, of course, the LPs are of DG’s finest analog quality. On a personal note, I have sold the Schneiderhan set on four separate occasions and this is easily the finest copy I have had or seen.

The work timings are as follows:

Sonata for Violin and Harpsichord No. 1 in B minor BWV 1014 (15:44)

Sonata for Violin and Harpsichord No. 2 in A Major BWV 1015 (14:55)

Sonata for Violin and Harpsichord No. 3 in E Major BWV 1016 (17:45)

Sonata for Violin and Harpsichord No. 4 in C minor BWV 1017 (17:44)

Sonata for Violin and Harpsichord No. 5 in F minor BWV 1018 (18:35)

Sonata for Violin and Harpsichord No. 6 in G Major BWV 1019 (18:13)

Schneiderhan was a remarkable Bach player, as his accounts of the Partita No. 2 in D minor for Solo Violin BWV 1004 so commandingly demonstrated. He is no less insightful here and the choice of Richter as accompanist was an inspired one, for the latter's command of this repertoire is beyond praise. Together they make a formidable duo, one recorded in Archiv / DG's finest analog quality sound – treasurable from first bar to last.

This handsome set includes a full-size 8-page booklet with extensive notes on the music by Werner Neumann (texts in German, French, and English), as well as striking full-page portraits of Bach, Schneiderhan, and Richter. A wonderful and rewarding set, by one of the great violinists of the last Century.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the box is near-MINT. There is slight wear at corners, but really that is all. There are no corner breaks, seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the box remains solid, bright, and extremely attractive in appearance – overall, this rates as an extremely handsome collector’s copy.

The condition of the 8-page full-size booklet is near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of – the pages are bright, crips, and the binding perfect.

The condition of the 2 LPs is MINT throughout. There are no spindle trails or other marks and playback in both is superb – overall, these are truly fine collector's copies.
