Background/History

Spanish Singles and EPs are often unique to Spain and unparalleled in their graphic and photographic content, featuring picture sleeves with band/artist photos which did not appear on sleeves from other countries. The golden age of rock and pop was heavily censored here and translations of pop song titles were often absurd attempts by the prevailing regime to influence Spanish youth or protect them from the evils of anglo american excess, corruption or freedom of expression - Roll Over Beethoven (Quita de en medio, Beethoven), translated as 'me gusta Beethoven - I like Beethoven', for example. Other sleeves are beautifully naive drawings or depictions of the lyric content or simply photos of dancing couples or anonymous musicians. Sometimes sleeves feature photos rejected by UK or USA record companies because of some visual fault; Mick Jagger looking the other way at the moment the pic was taken or something similar. J.J. Hudson, in his excellent and very recommendable book: Catalogue of Spanish E.P'S  1954-1968, from 2001 says, The first EP was released in Spain in 1954. The musical demand in the market was understandably for Spanish performers and folklore and therefore the music industry paid little or no attention to singers from other shores and this is reflected in the number of pressed copies for some artists. It is a fact that only 50 to 200 copies was the total output for some acts. Obviously this changed later on, especially with the advent of the popularity of the seven inch single and the LP in the early seventies but it would be no exaggeration to say that many of the artists featured in these auctions only had aproximately 500 of their records pressed. How many of these survive? And how many survive in decent condition? Nowadays, with the international financial crisis and recession, many copies of previously unseen on ebay records are coming to light. It is a great moment to buy at a good price. However, this cannot last forever. When this situation starts to change, prices will once again return to normal and probably never again will the current investment opportunity exist.

Condition:

Mint: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in factory-fresh condition. This grading is nearly impossible for a 35 to 50 year old record.

Near Mint: The record is shiny and new looking with minimal or practically no use. There are no defects on the record or sleeve although the record is obviously not fresh-out-of-the factory.

Excellent: Similar to above but the record shows some signs of having been played. There is very little lessening in the sound quality. The cover might have very slight wear or creasing.

Very Good: This is a very misunderstood grade. It does not mean everything else which is not mint or excellent. It means that the record has obviously been played many times but displays no major deterioration in sound quality despite visible surface marks and some barely audible crackling. Normal wear on the sleeve  - nothing major like big tears or rips - is acceptable.

Good: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has deteriorated considerably, perhaps with some distortion or mild scratches. The cover and/or other contents may suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration etc.

Fair: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise: it may even jump. The cover and contents may be torn, stained and defaced.

Poor/Bad: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise etc. It may even be boken. The cover and contents may be badly damaged. This record may only be of use as a collection-filler.
