Those who connect with the artful folk style of artists like Tim Buckley, Bruce Cockburn, Jeff Johnson and Robin Runge/Crow will definitely want to tune in to the music of Australian Peter Campbell. Of Time And Its Distance gives lots of variety for the listener, with Campbell’s 12-string guitar typically being the central theme. ‘Let Me Ride’ opens the album on a strong progressive note, intelligent lyrics backed by a rich canopy of 12-string, electric guitar, synthesizer and organ. Good plugged-in riffs can be found on the appropriately named ‘Sweet Rock N Roll’. Many of the songs, however, are quiet-natured: ‘The Light Stays On’ with its dreamy mood; the tin whistle-backed ‘Only The Traces’; a moving piano ballad ‘Still The Same’. ‘Song For Leigh’ is a beautiful fragile acoustic song, lovingly accompanied by cello. ‘Sweden’ begins softly, building up to a dynamic climax of electric guitar. Gets into bluegrassy banjo mode for ‘On The Run’ (“it’s living as I need it for the deed that Jesus done, ooh we got tomorrow on the run”). A touch of George Harrison-styled guitar on ‘Love Comes Through’. Foldout cover with lyrics. Among the best Australia has to offer. (Ken Scott - Archivist)

Peter Campbell The Biography

Peter Campbell is an Australian songwriter and performer whose professional career, and commitment to the folk process, has spanned 35 years and taken him before concert audiences in Great Britain, Europe and the USA, as well as across Australia.
Born in Singleton, NSW Australia in 1950, Peter first stepped onto the stage at the age of 9 as a magician. His television debut soon followed as a violinist and then as a ventriloquist. He took up the guitar at 12 and first played and sang professionally at 15.
In 1969, while studying architecture at the University of Sydney, Peter became involved with Graham (Auntie Jack) Bond, his design tutor, and this led him to the professional theatre when, in 1969, he joined Bond as one of the cast in the Philip Theatre production, 'A Candy Striped Balloon' and the ABC film, 'A Man on a Green Bike'. This time also saw the maturing of Peter's unique musical style and easy stage presence as he made frequent and popular appearances at concerts and folk clubs in Sydney.
His first album, 'Of time and it's distance', was released in 1975. Public response was immediate and enthusiastic.
'His lyrics are too compassionate to sound self-satisfied and the manner in which he musters images around an aphoristic catchphrase is too open-minded to sound smug. Rather, his songs deal with loneliness, freedom and love, and sensitive aspects of interpersonal relationships are dealt with in an appropriately susceptible manner'.
Christie Eliezer, Rolling Stone.
This album introduced Peter to Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul & Mary fame. In 1977 Stookey invited Peter to open the shows for his second solo Australian tour and then, in 1979, Peter recorded a second album, with Stookey producing at his Neworld studio in Blue Hill, Maine USA. The new album, 'Across the Border' was released in May 1981.
'Peter Campbell's songs are the bitter-sweet, even haunting, musings of a man who intuitively grasps something of the mysteries of faith and life, and of the confluence of the two, and who is able to capture those intuitions with permanent freshness in his lyrics. Peter has the thrilling knack of empathy that enables him to move inside people's states of mind so that he is not singing about them, but about himself as one of them - singing on behalf of them. It's a rare gift, and for that alone he deserves a wide and appreciative audience.'
Owen Salter, On Being
Peter Campbell has long been known as a perceptive and compelling songwriter. His song 'One Last Wild River' became and anthem for those who successfully struggled to save the Franklin River in Tasmania's south-west from destruction by damming for hydro-electric power. Peter, Paul & Mary's cover of his song 'Wild Places' on their album 'Such is Love' confirmed him as a songwriter of international standing. (This album was re-released in late 1998). In 1982 he supported PP&M on their national Australian tour. He has been the guest artist at numerous conferences, festivals and seminars throughout Australia and has been the subject of an ABC program entitled 'The Human Music of Peter Campbell'.
In the mid 80’s Peter explored the possibilities of combining the rollicking good fun of acoustic music with the classic mysteries and genuine entertainment value of the magician and ventriloquist (hidden skills from Peter's past). The MUGIC MAN was born in 1986 and became a highly popular specialist school's performance for children. In 1990, after 4 years in front of thousands of spellbound school kids, the Mugic Man was forced to retire with the onset of a chronic throat complaint that resulted in the loss of his voice.

In 1998 Peter returned to the folk stage with the release of a Live/Retrospective double album, trusting that the illness had been laid to rest. 'Rear View Mirror' is in part retrospective, but while certainly looking back, it pushes the boundaries and looks forward in the true tradition of folk music. Campbell’s ability is to combine the power of understatement with a lyric and melodic beauty that dissolves despair into tears as quickly as it brings laughter and joy. From politics and society, to the environment, the family and deeply personal matters of the heart, this music speaks a kind of ‘musical Esperanto’ that touches the inner being.
Peter said of the release...
'Songs are like children…there comes a time when you have to let them go. Some of the songs in this collection are teenagers now, while some are in their mid-twenties; quite old enough to be out on their own! They have grown out of the continuum of laughter, tragedy, joy, fear and love which is a feature of every life, and, like so many children, have taken on the task of revealing some of the truth about that life. There is a LOT of music here… it is a 'brain-dump' intended to clear the head and make room for getting to know the newborns squawking in the delivery room.'
