The release of Relics was sparked by the success of Atom Heart Mother which peaked at number 1 on the British charts.
Until the more definitive release of The Early Singles (1992, part of Shine On), Relics was most noted for its inclusion of Syd Barrett-era hit singles, "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play", as well as B-sides to three other singles. The Relics versions of "Paintbox", "Julia Dream" and "Careful with That Axe, Eugene" are mixed in stereo. The album also includes a previously unreleased studio recording of a Roger Waters composition, "Biding My Time", which had otherwise only been heard by live audiences as part of "The Man and The Journey" concert sequence.
ALBUM PLAYED FOR GRADING:
Yes – brilliant! - TOP AUDIO
RELICS is a complex collection of tracks, that are diverse in their subject and audio output, and is also an incredibly sensitive piece of vinyl. Worn copies can have a lot of surface sound even on musically complex and busy tracks like ‘The Nile Song’. I am a huge fan of RELICS, and also a highly critical of the audio performance. I just cant stand to hear a pressing that is worn or plays with anything other than great clear sound, and it is so hard to find a 1st pressing with great audio performance.
I am pleased to say that this one plays through with great, un disturbed audio, and I will give a detailed account below. This great record plays up to the high visual grading and beyond . Strong sound free of any loud pops or clicks. Channels are clean and unstressed. It has been hardly played. There is some light occasional static (as found on all vinyls) but it is very light, and the audio is brilliant strong and clear, its is a stunning listen.
This is a great sounding press starts with surprisingly little sound at al in the run ins. 'Arnold Lane' that is always plagued by crackle, hiss and static. Just great clear sound, the track plays superbly with not a single light tic, click or pop. The audio is perfect, and I really dont say lightly, other than on extremely rare occasions. Again, the long intro to 'Interstellar Overdrive' also sounds fantastically clear and the whole of the first side really plays with superbly clear audio throughout. Not a single pop or click. Just perfect audio. 'See Emily Play just sounds incredible, as does 'Remember a Day', super clear sound and just the faintest sound of some very occasional very background static in the long intro. The apocryphal 'Paintbox, sounds amazing and plays with no pops or clicks and virtually no static what so ever. Any surface sound is extremely quiet and infrequent. Absolutely no pops or clicks, and certainly not even a hint of distortion.
I'm very happy to say that the same goes for the long intro to 'Julia Dream'. So often heavily distorted and affected by clicks and hiss, it plays through with amazing clarity and perfect sound. Some very occasional static, but it is extremely light and really grades towards and at a full NEAR MINT all the way through. Even the stunning 'Careful with that Axe Eugene', such a difficult track to find with clear sound, pays superbly. There is some very light static during the long bird song intro to 'Cirus Minor' and this track is just sensational. Amazing audio for such a quiet track. There are a couple of very light tics between this track and the 'Nile Song', but not in the music, that plays superbly. the long quiet intro to Bidding my time, sounds amazing. One clicks between the track but no pops or clicks at all during the music. Rounding off with the classic Barrett 'Bike', the audio is just superb.
This is undoubtedly the clearest pressing of 'Relics' I have heard. An amazing audio performance. 'Arnold Lane' kicks in side two with amazing clearly, largely flawless audio. Any background static I have to strongly state is far in the background, and in no way comes through any of the music anywhere on this vinyl.
The record plays with staggering power, Great audio nothing obtrusive to distract from the overly enjoyment of this great record. Hardly any surface or static noise between the tracks, even in the long quiet sections it is clean, crisp and rich.
The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, particularly on the percussion instruments, and vocals, which come through with tremendous power and clarity. As is the same with the keyboard layering and drums, whilst the guitars come through crisp and clear. On the whole this lp plays with superb, clear bright rich audio. I have given a detailed account and l believe I have been extremely unforgiving in pointing out the slightest audio interference. Any surface sound absolutely minimal, the sound quality is so consistent and extremely high, I would easily give an overall audio grading at NEAR MINT!
THE RECORD – Visual Grading
A stunning piece of glossy vinyl, this rare 1st press is really thick and chunky, with amazing deep clear grooves. In daylight it looks completely unmarked. A couple of faint whispy paper handling marks only, and need to be seen under an intense spotlight. A really wonderful example that has been very little played! A really great example. Easily grades at NEAR MINT.
THE LABELS - NEAR MINT
A lovely set of labels virtually completely unmarked. Only the hint of a couple of the lightest, near invisible spindle traces. These are a great pair of labels that have clearly only seen my turn table a few times ! A lovely set, no spindle wear, and certainly no writing, finer prints or other marks.
VINYL TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING:
Yes, NONE visible what so ever when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.
THE COVER
The Matt finish covers of RELICS are very prone to wear. Being matt finish, textured and WHITE, and not having the advantage of being laminated, these covers usually faired pretty badly, with serious ring wear and scuffed along the edges. The Spines are nearly always flattened, worn and scuffed. Not this one!
This 1st press comes with its original 1st Press Cover. The 'textured' Cover that came with the first pressings, quickly changed to the standard covers, so these original are extremely rare.
This 1st Press Cover has NO scuffing to the corners, or rubbing along the edges, and that is virtually un heard of for RELICS. The opening edges are very square and totally un frayed, with virtually NO detectable ring wear on either the rear or front cover, again unheard of. The back cover is nice and clean, again with only a very light impression of the vinyl, but NO ring wear, which is very unusual for these delicate covers. The Spine shows minimal wear only, and is a nice square example. All round, this is a really nice example, with some minor creasing on the top front right hand corner , and apart from that and some very very minor handling wear, it is hardly marked at all!
And, this is an ORIGINAL 1st Press COVER, and a nice white one at that. Strictly grades at EXCELLENT PLUS, I am sure most be would grade it higher.
THE INNER
Original inner sleeve in EXCELLENT PLUS condition. No tears, stains, just some light creasing and NO seem splits at all!!!
And dont be fooled, these are completely different to all other inner sleeves from the UK pressings of RELICS. These inners are themselves rare and so hard to find with out heavy wear, graffiti, tears and splitting.
RARITY
RELICS has been re produced in massive quantities, being an extremely popular Floyd album. On saying that, finding an original UK early press in great condition is unbelievably rare indeed. Its an extremely rare collectable, it is so hard to find a 1st pressing with great audio performance. There are so many extremely long quiet passages, making it a very tricky piece of vinyl from the early 1970's to find with great audio.
The cover is almost impossible to find without serious wear, even modestly worn examples are scarce and this one is a brilliant example. Finding a great cover like this, with a great piece of vinyl, rare 1st press inner sleeve with original and correct 1st press post card, fantastic!.
A RELICS pressing in this type of condition is scarce. The vinyl is so often played so much, heavily marked, scratched, with noisy, poor and distorted sound. Any RELICS examples with a record in this type of condition, that plays superbly are incredibly rare. An ORIGINAL 1st A1 press, with ORIGINAL 1st Press Cover and ORIGINAL inner sleeve and post card, all in great condition, makes this very rare indeed!
GREAT COVERS WITH NO SEAM SPLITS, NO TEARS, NO WRITING, NO STICKERS.
GREAT VINYLS WITH NO LOUD CLICKS OR POPS, NO JUMPS OR REPEATS - GUARANTEED!
SCRUPULOUS EXAMINATION and TESTING; PLEASE NOTE:
This record has been play tested on highly sensitive equipment to ensure the sound quality and accuracy of description. I aim to give a precise and concise description of the sound quality, pointing out any defects so that you know what you are buying. I will not go into screeds of information about the nature of the songs, as I imagine that you already know them well. I aim to describe all items as accurately as possible, and offer a full refund on return if for any reason you are not completely happy with the item description.
.
VINYL SOUND - PLEASE NOTE:
The highest quality vinyl with clear sound is rare, and is what I always aim for. I only sell records that play with TOP AUDIO performance, super clear sound uninterrupted by hiss or other interference. Even with the cleanest copies you will find occasional static sound or occasional light tics during playback, caused by a build of dust in the grooves. This is clearly different from the distortion, loud pops, repeating tics or clicks that are found on heavily played and worn pieces of vinyl. Any static build up will reduce when played, and I advise a light clean should be given between plays for optimal performance.
VINYL
Large format art work covers with the original sound and mix unique to vinyl and of the highest quality audio. Vinyl record have always been loved and have become a great investment opportunity, with prices soaring over the last ten years, making classic pieces a great financial as well as a cultural investment.

MINT: Virtually unplayed. The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. Cover is pristine.
EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
V.G PLUS: The record will still be nice and shiny, but may have a few light marks, and will play well. Slight wear and tear on the cover.
V.G: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items.
GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, etc.
FAIR: Fair. It is noticeable that the record has been played so much that the sound quality has deteriorated very noticeably. The cover and contents are showing signs of folding, scuffing of edges etc.
