WHRC PROMOSWHRC was a low-powered radio station that served the dormitory system at Purdue University from the mid-1950’s to the mid-1970’s. While a graduate student in 1973-1974, I was a residence hall advisor and supervised the radio club that operated WHRC. In early 1974, I received a call from the Director of Residence Halls requesting that the club remove its record archive from the dormitory storage room. When we unlocked the door, we found several milk crates filled with albums stored in acid-free green library sleeves. Looking through the crates, most of the popular rock and roll albums had already been removed. However, since I couldn’t bear to see over 1,500 albums go into a dumpster, I agreed to take them. Since that time, the records have been moved only twice and have been stored upright in a cool dry basement. About half of the LPs are special label promos (white, pink, yellow); the other half are early pressings of stock copies (sometimes with a designated promo label). There are no album covers--the radio station manager told me that most of the records had arrived at the station in a plain white cover with a playlist. These records were sent to radio stations in advance of the public release and often before the title, cover design and side order were established. Most of the records have WHRC stamped or written on the label. The vast majority of these records have never seen a turntable. Each record has been carefully cleaned using the old-fashioned but fairly effective DiscWasher system. Each record has been test-played on a Technics SL-5 Direct-Drive turntable rechannled for mono with an Audio-Technica stereo cartridge set to track at 1.25 grams.
GRADING
Each record has been visually inspected and played. Any defect is noted above. Please note the following:
Mono records were cut to play at a tracking force of about 3 grams. Mono cartridges were designed with a spherical stylus; stereo cartridges have a elliptical stylus. Mono cartridges are available and range in price from $75 to $2000.
Cheap trick: By using male and female y-plug RCA connectors, a stereo cartridge will play in mono. This greatly increases the sound quality and reduces distortion/surface noise.
I’m interested to hear from collectors as to how these records sound with a good mono cartridge after a machine cleaning.
I WILL BE LISTING RECORDS FROM THE WHRC PROMOS COLLECTION OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL MONTHS, PLEASE BOOKMARK MY AUCTION PAGE
