This is a Muddy Waters album, but it intersects so tightly with the history of the Band, that it should be checked out by any serious fans of the group. Levon Helm -- who is as proud of having made this record and worked with Muddy as he is of any music he's ever made -- produced and played, and Garth Hudson played keyboards on these sessions, which otherwise feature Waters' touring band. The repertory includes several blues and R&B standards, among them "Kansas City" and "Caldonia," of the kind that the Band did on Moondog Matinee, except that these performances are better. Further, the album is a prelude to Waters' presence at The Last Waltz. Indeed, The Muddy Waters Woodstock Album is really a nexus between Moondog Matinee and The Last Waltz, and picks up a broken thread from the group's early history -- The Band had hooked up briefly with Sonny Boy (Rice Miller) Williamson II in Arkansas, and had hoped to record with him, but Williamson died of cancer before they could work together. This late-era Muddy album gave Helm and Hudson a chance to work at Chess before the label closed its doors, with a figure of even greater stature than Williamson. What's more, for the record, it's a great album, a Grammy winner for Muddy and one of Helm and Hudson's more rewarding non-Band projects.

(REVIEW REPRINTED COURTESY OF BRUCE EDER, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

This was the very last album the legendary bluesman recorded for his equally legendary label. As it turned out, this swan song (Muddy went on to record a few more, less-than-memorable records under auspices of Johnny Winter) was a dry, lean, honest and down-to-earth album , the kind of we came to expect from the progenitor of the modern blues - and not the electric, overproduced drek that he was forced to record by Marshall Chess in the late 1960’s. Backed up by the entire Band (as in" Bob Dylan and the Band") and pretty much the entire Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Muddy gives his best in these 12 selections, and literally walks out of Chess Records with a Bang! Musicianship on this album is nothing if not supremely competent and confident, with the white musicians clearly respectful of the great blues genius and bowing to his leadership. (Muddy reciprocated two years later by giving an incendiary performance on The Band’s "Last Waltz"). The combination succeeds on many levels. In my modest view, this is Muddy’s best effort in the second part of his career, and certainly the best album he did since the time he recorded "Folk Singer" in 1963

·                               CONDITION:

·                               THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams and the opening side

-         Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
