"Thriller" wurde im Dezember 1982 als sechstes Soloalbum (und zweite Zusammenarbeit mit Produzent Quincy Jones) via Epic Records veröffentlicht und katapultierte den früheren Kinderstar und Lead-Sänger der Jackson Five in die Stratosphäre der internationalen Superstars. Zu den genre-prägenden Grooves aus "Thriller" entwarf Jackson den weltbekannten "Moonwalk"-Move, revolutionierte sämtliche Aspekte der Mainstream-Popkultur, vom Radio-Airplay bis zu damals aufkommenden Kunst der Musikvideos, und wurde in der Folge zum unumstritten beliebtesten und erfolgreichsten Popstar der Welt.
"Thriller" rangierte achtzig Wochen lang ununterbrochen in den Top Ten der US Album Charts, 37 davon auf Platz eins. Sieben der neun Titel des ursprünglichen Albums platzierten sich in den Top Ten der Billboard Hot 100, einigen gelang der Sprung an die Spitze der Hitlisten in den USA, Großbritannien, Frankreich, Italien, Australien, Dänemark, Belgien, Südafrika, Spanien, Irland, Neuseeland und Kanada. "Thriller" ist das erste und bis dato einzige Album, das zwei Jahre hintereinander die Jahres-Bestseller-Listen in den USA anführte.
Der Longplayer wurde alleine in den USA 27 Mal mit Platin ausgezeichnet. Außerdem erreichte das Album Multi-Platin-Status in Argentinien, Australien, Brasilien, Belgien, Kanada, Finnland, Frankreich, Japan, Mexiko, Niederlande, Neuseeland, Portugal, Spanien, Schweiz und Großbritannien. Auch in Deutschland erreichte "Thriller" Platz eins der Albumcharts, hielt sich insgesamt zwölf Wochen in den Top Ten und wurde mit Dreifach-Platin ausgezeichnet. Im Jahre 1985 erhielt "Thriller" eine Eintragung ins "Guinness Book of Records" als das das meistverkaufte Album aller Zeiten - ein Rekord, der bis zum heutigen Tage Bestand hat.

Among the genre-influenced grooves of "Thriller" Jackson designed the world famous "Moonwalk" Move, revolutionized all aspects of mainstream pop culture, from radio airplay until then emerging art of music videos, and was subsequently the undisputed most popular and successful popstar in the world.
"Thriller" ranked eighty weeks continuously in the Top Ten of the U.S. album charts, 37 of them at square one. Seven of the nine original title of the album placed in the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100, some succeeded in making the jump to the top of the charts in the U.S., Britain, France, Italy, Australia, Denmark, Belgium, South Africa, Spain, Ireland, New Zealand and Canada. "Thriller" is the first and only album to date, two years in a row the annual best-seller lists in the U.S. arguing.
The long player was alone in the U.S. with 27 times platinum.
